Most of the lifting advice on here encourages guys to focus exclusively on the Big 3 and stick to programs like 5x5, madcow, etc. This is great; especially for beginners. Everyone needs a foundation. But there is one constantly undertrained muscle group that can substantially boost your SMV:
- Neck
This is probably the most undertrained muscle group in every lifter I know; even the serious ones. I see exactly zero people doing direct neck work in the gym. I think it just never crosses most peoples' minds.
Why do you want a big neck?
Highly developed neck muscles will substantially increase the masculine aesthetic of your face. A wide neck will make your jaw appear more square. You will also appear to be a lower bf% than you actually are because the fat on your face/neck will be distributed over a larger surface area. Think about guys that have hyper-masculine/intimidating facial features (The Rock, other pro wrestlers, NFL linesman, Channing Tatum when bulked, etc). The main thing all these guys have in common aesthetically are thick necks. Maybe the best thing about neck training is that your neck is always exposed. You can spend months dieting for ripped abs but nobody gives a shit because you can't see them in clothes. With a thick neck, you always have an immediate display of physical dominance/power that also enhances your facial aesthetics.
Lucky for us, the neck is very responsive to training. You can add a few inches two your neck within three months of direct work. The neck works like any other muscle, so I'm not going to give you advice on sets/reps. That's up to you and your programming. My only advice is to train your neck at least as often as you train other muscle groups. However, I will leave you with three movements that will cover all your neck training needs:
- Neck curls (most important by far)
- Neck extensions
- Side neck raises
Any of these movements can be performed laying flat on a bench with a plate. Alternatively, you can purchase a neck harness if you get serious about your neck training. If using a plate, make sure to use a rag or something between your head and the plate. I'm not going to describe the movements here. They're simple enough; just google them.
I highly recommend neck curls when starting out. These will hit the major muscles in the front and sides of the neck, and will give you the most bang for your buck. They'll also correct your forward-head posture, which most of you probably have.
You simply can't go wrong with adding a neck accessory movement to your standard lifts. Hardly increases your recovery needs and can make a massive aesthetic difference. Go hit the iron.
Note: Originally inspired to do neck training by AlphaDestiny. He's a pretty decent fitness youtuber who advocates a variant of the Westside Barbell Conjugate system. Follow him for more info if interested.
EDIT: For those of you interested in boxing/MMA, neck training can help save your brain from trauma in the long run. Numerous studies show that neck strength/thickness help prevent brain damage from repetitive blows to the head by reducing whiplash and lateral movement of the cranium. Also makes you harder to KO.
jimmybond000 6y ago
I started doing neck exercises thanks to alpha destiny. I agree if you work these out it will make you appear more masculine. you can even buy a plate or 2 and do these neck curls at home. great post
i_like_herr 6y ago
Is neck different to trapezius muscles? Can you please explain the difference with pictures if they are different?
MrSaiyan_333_ 6y ago
But a wide neck can make your shoulders look more narrow.
theTurkeyDancer 6y ago
if anyone is worried about safety, you can do neck work just using your hands pushing against your forehead. resistance bands are also good. they sell neck harnesses on amazon for like 30 bucks.
warburgio 6y ago
Best so far were snatch grip high-pulls. 5 set of 3 reps. Trapezius sky rocketted.
AircraftWelder 6y ago
Yep, started training neck 3x per week last year. Started at 17” circumference and am now at 18.75”. Up to 2x plates (90 lbs) with neck curls for 20 reps. Big changes in pictures.
bullish-gains 6y ago
Alpha destiny apprives this post.
Tbh I don't train do direct neck training, but as someone mentioned already, heavy deadlifts and shrugs seem to result in neck gains (at least in my experience).
I agree that a thick neck can improve aesthetics, but you definitely need to be careful if you train it directly. Overall agree with your post. I would also add that anyone following a powerlifting program (focused on the big 3) should incorporate back training (vertical and horizontal pulls) to avoid imbalances.
upyoars 6y ago
Wow. I've heard that neck exercises can deepen your voice too because if you strengthen your sternocleidomastoid muscles then they can take off a lot of the strain your vocal cords take when speaking. This allows your voice to be naturally more deeper without cracking and stuff.
[deleted]
zeekt12 6y ago
Deadlifts do work, only if you bring your head up though. It's a good way to isometrically train your neck and overload. Check omarisuf.
But yeah, neck curls, bridges extensions and you're golden
throwlaca 6y ago
I would be extremely careful about neck exercises. Any injury there is quite catastrophic.
Unlucky_Summoner 6y ago
Can confirm! I accidentaly made a squat with bad form on relatively high weight (85% of my one rep max) and i felt a hard stitch in my neck...had constant neck pain + headache for the rest of the day whenever i had to strain my neck. Went on for two months! So always check your form, neck is fragile.
S-Blaze 6y ago
You don't need weights or sketchy methods to train it simple neck curls with mid air pauses tension will do wonders.
NofapFrance 6y ago
True, do them slowly, warm up your neck, and everything should goes well, just be super careful and let your ego at the door if you do loaded neck exercises. But like everything, if done well, it is super useful.

Mayweather trained his neck constantly leading up to fights. He believed that a strong neck kept him from getting knocked out. This is something to consider
tinydickbigballs 6y ago
Every fighter trains neck for this reason.

How can this be upvoted this much? So much risk-averse blue pill bs on this sub rn its ridiculous
throwlaca 6y ago
Listen kid, taking care of your body is not blue pill. You cannot fuck with a broken neck.
GodOfDinosaurs 6y ago
This is a fair criticism, but I don't think neck training is any more dangerous than a movement like the deadlift. In fact, deadlifts are probably more dangerous given the increased load and complexity of mechanics required for proper form. If you're really that concerned, you can focus on volume work and still achieve a solid degree of hypertrophy.
flowrider00 6y ago
I've never seen neck training for Strength (Low Reps, Heavy Weight) and it makes a lot of sense. I wouldn't imagine you would benefit from this type of training.
Unless you plan on developing your headbutt power.
Or unless you plan on pulling a car with your head/teeth.
Or unless you take part in a specific activity, where your neck has to be capable of taking maximal loads for very short periods of time.
ATPsynthase12 6y ago
The issue I have with neck exercises is that the cervical spine (neck) is a lot less stable and more likely to injure as opposed to thoracic or lumbar spine which is more secure due to the various muscles attaching to it.
With someone who is trained like you and I, neck workouts are fine. But you must remember that it’s actually common for people to sleep funny on their neck and end up with a pinched nerve. This thing wasn’t meant to be worked in the same way as a bicep or pec.
In all honesty you are probably more likely to herniate a disk or get a pinched nerve in your cervical spine doing neck extensions than deadlifts.
To be honest no one gives a shit about the neck. There are more aesthetically pleasing muscles that get neglected constantly (calves, quads, glutes etc.) that don’t require you to risk fucking your neck up for life.
It’s Risk vs. Reward and honestly, having a muscular neck should be pretty low on your priorities all things considered.

If you train neck correctly it actually can prevent injuries
Chaddeus_Rex 6y ago
What is 'training the neck correctly'? I was thinking of doing it, but was afraid of damaging the neck vertebra.
ralavio 6y ago
Using correct form and mind muscle connection while doing neck curls. Stretching the neck before hand correctly. It's helped me with my posture and definitely adds to my physique as I have an insanely long neck and it was pencil status. Not so much anymore and it helps keep my head up and shoulders back.
Chaddeus_Rex 6y ago
Are there any videos you can link on proper technique? I don't trust most fitness youtubers
ralavio 6y ago
Best and safest way is to start with 5 pounds and place on forehead. Then hang neck off of a bench and curl with your tongue smashed on the roof of your mouth.
I started doing them because of alphadestiny and I highly recommend him over the other fitness youtubers. He has TONS of info on his YouTube channel.
Not sure about technique videos but the key is light weight and moving slowly. Not too difficult of a movement but it can be done wrong.
Chaddeus_Rex 6y ago
What is the wrong way? So i know what to avoid. Thanks for the channel reccomendation.
ralavio 6y ago
Straining, going too heavy, not staying tight, not stretching. If you feel any pain day after just stop. Also not using full range of motion
[deleted]
[deleted] 6y ago
This is true of any weightlifting...
ralavio 6y ago
Correct but neck training directly helps posture. Bad posture is a very common cause of injuries and tightness.

I've noticed a considerable amount of relief since I started keeping my shoulders back and strengthening my posterior chain. Before that I was slouched over with bad neck pain. So what point are you trying to make
BuddhistSC 6y ago
I've had neck/head pain for many years and it took me a long time to figure out it was due to my posture when using a computer. In the last few weeks I've been paying a lot of attention to keeping my chest up and my head retracted (opposite of forward head posture) and it has immediately, heavily alleviated my issues. Plus I look better in a mirror.
[deleted] 6y ago
so because 700~ asymptomatic people had measurements done and a drastic change in posture was seen form 70 to 80 there is no such thing as good posture? I don't get it.
Sighters 6y ago
Many people believe that there is a one-fits all model of “good posture” this is not supported by the research nor is the fact that types of “bad posture” produce pain. Posture varies among individuals and changes across the lifespan without pain.

Thanks for the links.
I didn't know there was little evidence for what was said in the painscience article about tissues causing pain problem. But imagine that instead of tissues causing the pain it is more neurological dysfunction (like it was hypothesized it that article). It could be a systemic inflammatory response that's caused by depression which then causes the poor posture and also the pain associated with it. A guy sitting on his chair all day wouldn't have the pain response but his attractiveness is still lower because its reminiscient of it. So in terms of biological attraction I still believe a good posture to exist.

I personally have never maxed out on neck curls, nor do I think this is necessary/advisable. Hypertrophy/strength standards are going to depend on your build. My advice is to do neck exercises to figure out how strong your neck is, set a higher goal, meet it, and then set a new goal. Your neck will blow up in no time

dumb ass look up athlean x on youtube neck excersices, boxers have been doing neck exercises for decades now.. same with wrestlers.. it helps you in fights , harder to get knocked out by someone if you have a thick fucking neck
razioer 6y ago
Agreed, and since you mention AlphaDestiny; Traps.
Not as important as neck, but a close 2nd in this category.
The simple fact that your shirt will sit higher and your neck is wider will make you look quite big in clothing, without resorting to going a size too small.
Anecdotally, the only nattys I see with big necks are guys who tense their neck crazy and look up while dead lifting, so yeah not too many ppl train it. I see wider necks going to a concert with a bunch of metalheads from all the headbanging.

I never do Gym exercises for the neck, but my neck muscles have been built up from about 10 years of commuting 1 hour by bus by sleeping. I didn't realize I was doing it but my neck muscles got a good floppy headed workout.
What size neck are we talking about? 19?

I’m not really sure how you could do this vertically. Off the top of my head, maybe you could hook the band around something and then do curls with the other end of the band either in your mouth or around your forehead. I’ve never tried this but I suppose it’s worth a shot if you can’t do them horizontally.

Having a good physique is 1 part of your SMV. while I love lifting. I love lifting efficiently. You get far more pussy if you got many areas of your life covered as opposed to using too much time in the gym. Start to isolate neck will be a distraction. I think squat and deads also train the neck to some degree, atleast they seem to do so for me - I have never done neck training and I am not a pencil neck. What works my traps somehow also seems to work my neck some.

the_real_lunch_box 6y ago
I'm pretty sure heavy deadlifts and lower back pull movements would increase the neck size over time. A long time sure. I doubt those big football players you see on tv do neck exercises. The squat will also make your neck stronger. Its just there are so many things you have to do already, doing more neck movements on top just might be overkill for most guys here. I myself am only 25-40 min per session. Oh yeah and pull-ups too, face pulls are another alternative too.

Look at this neck, damn
Me myself I'm trying to get the V-build, have to work on lats more, I'm built like a freaking plank, just a rectangle.
inhiarashi 6y ago
Always worse when you look at yourself, outside opinions are critical as you do your work, can't stress how optimal even a month or two is with a personal trainer to get you on the right path.
crespo_modesto 6y ago
I'm doing alright. Still gotta cut though and get more definition. But yeah, I don't know I almost don't like being too big, not that I'm huge but I also feel scared when I see people at the gym bigger than me so I don't know. The being big thing like at my day job I'm bigger than a lot of people and I almost feel bad about my own body. People make comments but I also like what I see so Idk.
It's more my mental/financial security that I need work on. Like confidence in myself, not worrying that I'm gonna be homeless, etc... also social anxiety haha oh well, all takes time. I'm not free yet, clock in slave at this time.
edit: I would consider a personal trainer just to make sure I'm not doing something stupid. I make up some workouts like a combined deadlift + military press thing with barbells.
inhiarashi 6y ago
I think you are at a good spot. I'm looking to get about where you are. My life has been a nonstop rollercoaster since I had a divorce and before that a child.
I have great support now but fuck man. At 35 it's about time.
I'm just kidding but you totally need to do these neck workouts.
It's still a funny concept to me, but probably legit.
crespo_modesto 6y ago
Time for what? Change or freedom?
Man yeah that's almost a blessing that I was not great with women haha, no kids, but you know loneliness/no action as well also I'm financially destroyed from school loans and dumb credit decisions. I want kids someday.
So I'm free in one way and a slave another.
Hey man I'll add another workout routine to my 3hour+ session already. I just blast the music and get through it.
Good luck man. I can't comment on the divorce/children aspect I have not gone through that myself.
inhiarashi 6y ago
Don't. Kids are 255k a pop here in America.
Na I got freedom, this one is super submissive. If that changes she knows I'll walk out.
It does feel like the older I get the easier it gets. No this one pulls her weight. She's bad as fuck, buys me shit non stop cooks cleans and works tons.
She's a keeper for now.
I have to go lift now, you makin me feel like I got dad bod.

To what age? I heard like birth rate alone is expensive. Also the initial years of not a lot of sleep.

RPAlternate42 6y ago
As a wrestler, grappler, and bjj practitioner, I will not endorse doing 3 types of neck exercises.
I do recommend adding in shrugs at a 3x10-13 supersetted with lat raises to increase the shoulder thickness and trap thickness (for the neck slope) and then neck bridges for the actual muscles in the neck. Look up videos for wrestling neck warm ups.
Body weight neck work is more than enough to increase neck thickness.
Aesthetically, if your neck gets too big for your body, you will look sickly.
reluctantly_red 6y ago
Trap bar deadlifts work your neck. Include these in your routine and you don't need to do any neck specific exercises.
suxxos 6y ago
Oh, I don't know, don't you think a thick neck will make you look like a brainless musclehead?

This is so true. I've been working on my neck for the past 6 months. My neck looks like a lean tree trunk right now. Girls love it too, in conversation and in the sack. I've noticed girls blatantly staring at my neck while talking and girls have been kissing/licking/lite biting my neck more and more in the sack.

Question: What did you do about shirt collars?
I tried neck training but had to back off once it started growing because it made all my collars tight.
And I was worried that growing it any further would require excessive tailoring of everything.

So maybe add it on heavy squat day and one of the upper body days?

rp_southsider 6y ago
What is this bullshit? If you weigh 110 pounds and start doing "neck curls" you're not suddenly going to look like Arnie.
If you want a big neck then get the rest of your body stronger. Squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press. Read "Starting Strength" and apply it.

Nope. You made the assertion, you prove it. I'm happy with the size of my neck and traps, and I got that way through strength training. I don't like looking stronger, I like being stronger. I didn't get that way by doing "neck curls".
[deleted] 6y ago
[deleted]
rp_southsider 6y ago
Because, in general, isolation exercises are not a good way to look stronger. Being stronger is a good way to look stronger.
Isolation exercises are good if you are juicing, i.e. if you can't handle lifting naturally. Isolation exercises are also good if you want to get that gorilla gymbro look - huge pecs, biceps, triceps, hunched shoulders due to lack of back development and tiny chicken legs. Ridiculous.
My main issue with this post is that encouraging an untrained person to do isolation exercises for the neck is an excellent way for that person to end up injured.
[deleted] 6y ago
[deleted]
LyfeEngineer 6y ago
In my opinion, you don't need to do isolated neck exercises, if you are doing heavy weighted deadlifts, as long as you are not working on pro body builder level.
The heavy weighted deadlifts will be enough neck training for most people to develop a brutal bull neck. If you don't do deadlifts i agree, that training the neck with the exercises you named is important for a good neck. So if you do a 5x5 with deadlifts in the programm, the deadlifts are sufficient training for your neck in order to maximize its growth.
GodOfDinosaurs 6y ago
No doubt deadlifts hit your neck, but this is like saying you will get optimal bicep growth from underhand deadlifts because it works your biceps. You must do isolation work if you really want to overload your neck. Deadlifts will primarily hit your traps and the connected muscles in the back of your neck, which is why I emphasize doing neck curls to counterbalance this and fix your posture.
Further, deadlifts aren't even the optimal way to overload your neck/traps with a barbell in front of you. High rack-pulls will allow you to do much more weight in the same position where the maximal weighted stretch occurs for your neck and traps. By no means abandon deadlifts, but direct neck work is key if you want optimal neck gains.
FrankCostanza111 6y ago
In my personal experience. this is not true.
My neck only grew from direct stimulation. Front/rear wrestlers bridges. Rear bridge with a 45lb plate held outstretched above you.
These exercises made my neck significantly larger. Years of deadlifting did not.
[deleted]
Red_Faust 6y ago
What about the safety of these exercises?
I followed Starting Strength by Mark Rippetoe without being prepared for it and developed a nice lumbar protrusion thanks to it (and no, it wasn't for doing it in bad form, I even hired an expert personal trainer to supervise my form, it's because most office bodies are not ready for some movements, GayLubeOil explained it perfectly here: http://archive.is/SEoxZ - only, this post came out 2 years after my injury).
Of course people always say "it's safe if you do it well". Ok that's correct. Feeding chickens and feeding alligators are both safe if you do it well. If you do them slightly not well, a chicken peck is not exactly the same as an alligator bite.
So, do you have any resource, study, paper or book on the safety and long-term effects of these exercises?
I've done a bit of a search and this Bret Contreras page seems to be backed by some studies: https://bretcontreras.com/neck-training-101/
I'm still searching to see if Stuart McGill (the absolute best doctor for spinal injuries) has written something on the matter.
[deleted] 6y ago
The post by OP is over sensationalized bad advice
GodOfDinosaurs 6y ago
I'm not sure any long-term studies have been done. Anecdotally, I've seen zero reports of injuries from people properly doing these exercises. College wrestlers actually perform more dangerous movements like neck-bridges regularly. If anything, the research that exists suggests that neck training likely helps prevent other kinds of sports injuries that would results from a weak neck.
juhlordo 6y ago
could possibly be survivorship bias, those who got hurt by performing these exercises didn’t make it to the competitive collegiate level
anonlymouse 6y ago
How many people properly do the exercises though?
HoldDatCrew 6y ago
Building traps with shrugs and high rows will really help thicken the neck too. A muscular neck will also improve posture. A pencil neck is stupid looking, and I know all sorts of women who comment they prefer an athletic, thiccc neck(anecdotal). There ARE neck machines at my gym that I use occasionally. No one else seems to notice them. The equipment looks like it was made in 1983(I go to a private gym in a shitty little midwest town in the middle of nowhere that has dated equipment but still gets the job done).
Side note: I know people that practice MMA/BJJ do these exercises to help escape choke submissions.
Selentest 6y ago
I'm worried about sleep apnea, though. Isn't it a pretty common thing for people with thick (trained) neck?
aero23 6y ago
Yes it absolutely is but unless you take gear i very much doubt you will be able to reach the muscularity required for that
Aggressive_Beta 6y ago
That’s like saying “I’m worried about getting too muscular”
GodOfDinosaurs 6y ago
I think this is a problem for people that have fat necks. A thick, muscular neck will support your other soft tissues much better than an undertrained, fat neck. If you somehow develop sleep apnea (which I think is incredibly unlikely), you can simply stop training your neck and let it atrophy.

I played FB in HS, and naturally, I had a very thick neck. I only weighed 175 at the time, and my neck most definitely gave me sleep apnea. I'd wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air several times a night. Haven't had problems since. It wasn't muscle anywhere else because I'm much bigger now without any problems.

No need for neck exercises... You can gain a big neck with squats and deadlifts (if you maintain a good form)

I'm sorry, but this is one of the dumbbest posts I've seen on here.

I’m agreeing even though this comment has -7 votes. Any faggot who does “neck exercises” is retarded and deserves to die.
Do MMA and you won’t have to think about exercising your neck. jesus fuck.
