TL;DR
Ellen Pao continues to alienate the Reddit community by firing a prominent and well-loved administrator.
Body
As we all know, Pao has been making great strides to alienate Reddit users through her aggressive implementation of groupthink policies thinly disguised as "anti-harassment" rules. Less than a month ago, fatpeoplehate and other smaller offending subreddits were deleted for being misaligned with Reddit's new "inclusion" policy, and while the actions perpetrated by Pao against the community have so far only been against controversial subreddits, she has now successfully pissed off a large percentage of the default subs by firing a popular administrator.
Victoria Taylor was a officially "Director of CommunicationsTalent" but her day-to-day job largely involved organising the large number of celebrity and public-figure AMAs that reddit hosts. Other admins and mods have been quoted in the mainstream press as saying that her role in organising these efforts were invaluable; in other words, she was a key supporter of quite a few subreddits' administration efforts. Yesterday she was fired for unknown reasons, although it is suspected that it was in relation to Pao's new policy of relocating reddit employees to the California office; Taylor worked from New York. This move has been attempted previously with Marissa Mayer (yahoo CEO) attempting to force work-from-home employees to congregate and ended in disaster. Another theory is that it is related to the disastrous Rev. Jesse Jackson AMA - see https://archive.is/oCji7 for evidence.
In response to the loss of Taylor's support (and a general belief that the admins of reddit are ignoring and otherwise disrespecting many subreddit moderators), a swathe of default and popular subreddits have shut themselves down in protest, causing a likely massive loss to Reddit's bottom line. Events and facts will likely fall into place over the next few days, but as it currently stands some of the biggest subreddits including iAMA, funny (the most popular subreddit), pcmasterrace and many others have made themselves private and even more are currently debating whether to join in. Way to go on understanding the company you run, Pao. Heck, even our good friends over at TheBluePill have closed their doors.
All this goes to show that Pao's attempts to force change upon Reddit without first understanding its nature are going to cause serious repercussions in the long run. Radical feminists know no bounds in their solipsism and belief that they know the right thing to do in all circumstances and this is just the latest example that will likely lead to one of three things: the complete revamp of Reddit as a community platform to match Pao's exclusive far-left vision, the destruction of Reddit as a company, or Pao's ousting. I know which I'm rooting for.

Final Thoughts
I don't know if this will be the final straw that breaks reddit, but if it is I hope you've all signed up for the TRP backup at Puerarchy.com: reserve your username and join the mailing list from the links in the sidebar to make sure that if there are any issues that break TRP, you have access to its new home.

redpillschool Admin 9y ago
Since people have been pestering me for the official mod stance on this, here it is.
First of all, no we're not going dark. It's reddit politics/drama, and I don't really care to join them in the drama.
Secondly, if anybody on reddit cared about my gripes with the admin, I'll post them publicly so if somebody really wanted to fix what's wrong with reddit, they'd move away from the pretend issue that's happening, and push the admin on the real issue: censorship and mystery. Of course, their position on this is unlikely an accident, and I believe the grey area in which we operate is entirely on purpose to make it easy to dispose of communities they don't like if need be. (But yeah, if you wanted to solve the biggest threat to reddit, it's this)
It's well understood by our moderation team that we exist purely at the whim and mercy of the admin and that we must mind-read to understand what guidelines must be followed. There is no comprehensive rule book for mods- and more importantly, there's no set of rules to let us know how or what to follow to avoid being shut down like other subs.
The admin have had very little actual contact with us, beyond the random subreddit shut downs and dramas that take place here and there where we, as mods, have to decide what details to take from these events to apply to our own policy, lest we suffer the same consequences.
I have reached out more than once to the admin asking them about their opinion on certain policies or which rules we could follow to keep us in their good graces. I have never once received more than a few-word answer from them, which is usually along the lines of "just follow the reddit rules, it's that easy." Nothing could be more vague.
We're pretty sure there's an anti-brigading rule on reddit, but we've got no clue what it means, how it's applied, how we could possibly prevent it with our tools (we have little in the way of mod tools), and whether or not a user who happens to be a regular subscriber is considered "brigading" if they follow a link to get there.
If this reminded you of anything, like, say, how our ancestors used to try to read astronomical events and natural disasters to determine whether the gods above were angry with them... well, you'd be spot on. Because at the end of the day, no matter how careful we try to be, there isn't really a good rule set to know if we are even following the rules, let alone whether we're enforcing the right ones.
We take a conservative approach to modding, trying to mostly keep to ourselves and not stir the pot, and that seems to be doing the trick for now.
But if the rest of reddit really wanted to make a difference that would actually protect their interests, they would concentrate not on something stupid and small like IAMA mods having trouble doing their jobs, but instead something that threatens every single sub on the site: the creeping censorship that looms in the background, and the nebulous rule of Ellen Pao that threatens the very userbase as it stands today.
Most people don't consider it a problem because most subs are not controversial. We happen to be on the edge of acceptable which puts is in the cross hairs. But if any of these liberal idiots had even an ounce of smarts, they'd realize that when you nuke the fringe, you don't sanitize the site, you just make new fringes. Today we're in the cross-hairs, but it's anybody's guess what future admin find unpalatable when we're not around to draw the fire.
I'm sure Victoria was a nice girl, and this event may very well be the catalyst of change, but the admin will placate the masses soon enough with some small token gesture like re-hiring victoria, or a new mod tool, or a written explanation that doesn't tell much.
And no changes will be made that actually affect the disease that is eating reddit.
Mark my words.
mryddlin 9y ago
The petition to have her step down has exploded with signatures the last day.
Voat is probably going to capture a ton of traffic. this is looking like Digg all over again.
edit: don't forget secret santa, he got shit canned too. This looks like internal house cleaning of any dissident voices again Chairman Pao.
Not surprising at all. So glad it has blown up in her face :)
crisprcas9 9y ago
Simple question: Can I buy reddit?
rp_valiant 9y ago
Yeah I've been reading about the lack of mod tools and admin support available - it seems shocking that such an old company (in internet years) would not yet have a comprehensive suite of tools to help with community management. Plus the fact that there are strict anti-brigading and anti-harassment rules but SJW darlings like SRS and SRD seem to get away with it because they're on "the right side of history".
Let me know if there's anything I can do in terms of coding to improve the mod tools available - I could throw something together pretty easily using the reddit API and some screen scraping tools if needs be.
spectacle13 9y ago
So much this, I was appalled when fph was banned but srs was completely unscathed. The most notorious vote brigading and externally harassing sub in reddit history....absurd.
mryddlin 9y ago
But for now they are her allies, so not surprising at all.
ChristianGraysBoss 9y ago
Pao is a skilled sociopath. Don't expect her or her team to be 'fair'. They'll control reddit in a way that makes them money and pushes their agenda.
Sdom1 9y ago
She's not that skilled. She got booted out of her prior job, and not only lost the ridiculous lawsuit she brought, but it looks like she's going to be on the hook for costs as she deliberately caused the defendants to incur excessive litigation costs in an attempt to force a settlement.
She's just one of those people that looks good on paper and knows the right people, but has never produced a damn thing. They're all over the place. Office Space had a funny scene concerning this phenomenon, albeit at a middle management level.
[deleted]
niczar 9y ago
She's a prime example of that. That transpires very clearly from her lawsuit against KP. It reminds me of the judicial harassment a NPD I know is directing at his former business partner, a friend of mine. The psycho keeps being laughed out of court, but he keeps finding new lawyers and wasting his dad's money, and is clearly absolutely convinced he's being wronged.
niczar 9y ago
Apparently most of their staffing spending these days is not on technical (i.e. useful) people but on useless marketing types.
Marketing. For a community-driven website.
First thing Pao did when she arrived at reddit was remove all remote work, when it had been working out just fine for years. Staff had to relocate to the Bay Area and go work in their assigned cubicles. Typical psychopath/narcissist control freak.
mryddlin 9y ago
The policy was implemented by the previous CEO yishan and from the rumor mill sounds like he fucked her too and gave her Reddit to avoid a lawsuit.
She's just kept the policy going, not surprisingly
niczar 9y ago
Where did you hear that? I've always seen it attributed to Pao.
mryddlin 9y ago
In the live thread and all over in other threads.
I'll.see if I can find the SS but it is confirmed his policy.
Doesn't matter though, she kept it in place.
Edit http://www.siliconbeat.com/2014/11/14/yishan-wong-leaves-reddit-because-hes-completely-worn-out/
Google it, you'll find a bunch of articles but that one is interesting. He was forced out and makes sense why he posted 'uhhhh' in his subreddit.
I think someone is laughing his ass off right now :)

I_Am_My_Own_God 9y ago
On top of how often the site is down due to "memcache" issues. While it has improved in the last few months, I still get the message a few times per week.
rp_valiant 9y ago
I'm pretty sure they used gold to fund the site's traffic growth. It seems like reddit is focussed on monetising AMAs somehow, from what's come out of recent events.
TheDemon333 9y ago
Most have grown to believe that this is why Victoria was let go. Higher ups were pushing for a video AMA program, as well as more influence from publicists in the AMAs.
She disagreed with these changes and her position was abruptly eliminated, with no forewarning to the volunteer mods that relied on her.
Again, most agree that this protest is not just about one woman's job, but about the direction that the company has been going over the past few years, including censorship and deliberate miscommunication with the userbase.
KaribouLouDied 9y ago
That was refuted and dismissed. Don't care enough to find the link, however, it still leaves the question: Why was she fired?
mryddlin 9y ago
hmm the point of monterization is the only one that hasn't been refuted to my knowledge.
Secret Santa is in the same boat, he got canned to an that is another sub that could be monetized very easily (i.e. all the 'gifts' are from sponsors only type thing).
IMO it is house cleaning of those that don't agree with her.
caesarfecit 9y ago
This. Victoria's firing and the complaints of the mods are just the flashpoint; the straw that broke the camel's back. The real problem is Pao and the culture she is encouraging amongst Reddit employees.
It has manifested itself in the form of:
general aloofness.
vague, dishonest, self-serving answers to fair questions.
arbitrary and often abusive enforcement of the rules, especially against individual users and unpopular subreddits.
refusing to deal with, to the point of tacitly encouraging power mods and the increasing abuse of mod powers.
psuedo-narcissistic dismissal of complaints and criticisms from Reddit mods and users.
If this protest is going to mean anything, Pao must go.

Thanks for this. Reddit is just a tool guys, don't pretend it's the beginning and end of free speech. It's not irreplaceable and it's not yours so stop trying to make it suit your liking. The previous CEO had put forward a firm stance on free speech, which was a pretty big commitment. The new one loves playing the victim and censoring people. You go = her loss.
Elodrian 9y ago
Read Orwell, or Hitchens, or Hitchens' writings on Orwell discussing the mechanics of totalitarian regimes. One of the general ideas is that the goal is to create laws that are either ambiguous or actually impossible to follow to grant themselves a free hand to smite at whim. Your description of the mod/admin relationship bore some eerie echoes to Hitchens describing Stallinism.
Kid_Crimson 9y ago
Reminds me of a book called, Three Felonies A Day: How the Feds Target the Innocent.
"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws." ~ Ayn Rand
WillWorkForLTC 9y ago
I would love it is this sub started using ''The Hitchslap!'' as a standalone term. It basically means you've destroyed your opponent in a debate with pure reason, empirical evidence and common sense. Hitchens was a beast in debates. RIP Hitchens. You were more RP than you ever knew.
TomSachs 9y ago
"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kinds of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of lawbreakers - and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system,..., that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be much easier to deal with."
Redpillc0re 9y ago
Jesus relax guys, this is just reddit. What will you call it when you see actual stalinism?
[deleted]
[deleted] 9y ago
These laws were called "rubber laws" in Stalinist Russia.
CaptainIncredible 9y ago
Ayn Rand frequently wrote about the same concept.
I find it amusing that the current tax code in the US is nearly 75,000 pages long. If printed, it would stack about 23 feet tall.
Its unreadable too. Its mostly written in legalese gibberish that is difficult to make sense of.

SJWs/Communists, same thing. Modern feminism is pure conflict theory, and it's no accident.
SILENTSAM69 9y ago
Not true. There are libertarian SJW's out there as well. Being a SJW knows no political boundary.
I myself am very left wing, but can not stand the SJW's.
[deleted] 9y ago
Orly? Why are you on RedPill? Most if not all "left wing" issues are blue pill. Disagree? You go first....
SILENTSAM69 9y ago
I don't see anything saying "Conservative Only" here at RedPill. It seems to be a place that looks at sexuality in a rational way.
Hell I have seen gay men accepted here and talking about how RedPill theory works in gay communities as well.
I am economically left wing, but not when it comes to my home or my lifestyle. I am an atheist who hate right wing Christianity. I see it as starting to take too much power in Canada.
Why would you think left wing views on economics and religions would make someone disagree with TheRedPill?
BixNood2012 9y ago
No, not really. Just because they've hijacked the libertarian movement in the post-Ron Paul era and call themselves "libertarians" doesn't mean they are. They are only libertarian in that they believe in the freedom to be as degenerate as they want to be with no consequences whatsoever. They are the type of people who Based God Hoppe would say need to be, uh, physically removed, so to speak.
king_of_red_alphas 9y ago

ProfessorScribbles 9y ago
Something about the fallacy fallacy.
king_of_red_alphas 9y ago
Another lefty red piller here. TRP obviously leans VERY libertarian / conservative and tends to interject this political philosophy at every opportunity. Nothing wrong with it, but it can tend to obscure the more useful posts.
RedPillAnonymous 9y ago
It is absurd how this conservative attitude acts like it goes hand in hand with redpill views. Conservatives are literally the reason we are taught abstinence only in sex ed. However retarded feminism's sexual attitudes are, conservatives are full of their own absolute sexual stupidity. Its conservative christian views that tell us not to have sex until we are married, men included. Conservative christians are the driving force behind their own brand of white knight beta male "girls are innocent chastity fairies and boys need to respect them and not try to have sex until marriage", as well as always wanting to outlaw whatever petty shit they get offended by, e.g. marijuana, gay marriage, burning flags, ect.
There are no shortages of conservative christian men who are beta as hell as a direct result of conservative christian views and upbringing by a conservative christian two parent household. And there are no shortages of single mother household liberal cads banging the "sweet innocent chastity fairy" that the conservative christian nice guy has oneitis for. Get that message deep into your heads.
PS. Dark enlightenment is the gayest pile of romophiles I've ever seen. Durr Rome was the greatest of all societies! Ceasar was COOL! We need ALPHA MALE dictatorship because democracy is for faggy girly men! Dar we is enlightened! Give me a uniform to feel special!

king_of_red_alphas 9y ago
You just articulated all of those points in a way I've been trying (and failing) to do very succinctly. Thank you.
And oddly, I was one of those single mom, liberal guys that ended up being the "bad boy" for a young conservative girl who wanted to walk on the wild side to buck her sexually repressed parents.
anecdotal 9y ago
Libertarian SJWs? I would really, really like to see a legit, hand wringing SJW who calls himself a libertarian with a straight face. I need to meet this unicorn.
SILENTSAM69 9y ago
Look at the leaders of the Canadian Libertarian Party. They are SJW's and just booted a member for being anti-feminism. They did that despite her being their most popular member.
cariboo_j 9y ago
I'm Canadian and never heard of them.
I WILL vote for the Marijuana Party if they ever manage to get a candidate on the ballot though...
SILENTSAM69 9y ago
I had never heard of them either until this drama. I was surprised we even had a Libertarian party.
[deleted] 9y ago
I'm Canadian too - not familiar with the inner politics of the Canadian Libertarian Party. Are they CIVIL Libertarians? If so, that would 'splain it.
SILENTSAM69 9y ago
I didn't know much about them either. Seems they got a new leader lately though, and along with a couple other SJW's at the top they have started making changes.

"Just follow the reddit rule, it's that easy" Reddit Rule: "A sub should not be offensive" Yea, that easy. For controversial subs to get the boot.
Thursday088 9y ago
Well said, as a sub I would hope that we could push aside these petty situations and focus on what we have always been about, bettering ourselves.
There is absolutely nothing to win getting tied up in politics, which is exactly what this is. We are a group of like minded individuals with knowledge and theories that transcends power grabs and political maneuvering within an online community that means very little in the real world.
We should stick to what we know and continue spreading knowledge to those who wish to learn, and forgo taking sides in this no-win fight, because when this is over the price of oil will not be effected, the DowJones will not rise or fail pending outcome, life will move on as it always has.

FRONT_PAGE_QUALITY 9y ago
Personally I'm against this sub going dark specifically because TRP is a counterculture.
TheGillos 9y ago
What does that mean?
FRONT_PAGE_QUALITY 9y ago
It means that even though TRP is on Reddit, TRP stands apart from it due to our viewpoints. We don't need to go private because we already know about Pao's shit. The only thing we need is a way to discuss TRP values. If Reddit serves that function great. If not there's a plan B.
This latest round of reddit drama holds nothing of value for us. There's nothing to gain from joining in the shit slinging.
Rooi_Aap 9y ago
TRP is about the message so much more than the medium. Reddit is just the walls of the locker room in a gym. If the locker room/gym burns down TRP just gets another set of walls. Locker room talk is why we are here, not the walls. Fuck the walls. If you like this gym so much go paddle in the kiddie pool.
NidStyles 9y ago
I 100% agree with this. There is no reason to go private, we openly discuss out distaste for Chair Pao.
TheGillos 9y ago

I was actually curious to see what was the default feminist subreddit's (you know which) response to this whole drama. But there was NOTHING. So many other subreddits were showing 'solidarity' (It's a different topic but let's consider it true for the sake of argument) by going private. Even other subreddits who did not go private expressed their views in favor of the mods and Victoria. But nothing from that subreddit which calls for liberation of women and blah blah blah. Now I don't know why she was fired, but she was in redditors' good graces enough to be not only given the benefit of the doubt, but also given overwhelming support. But nothing from that shithole.
This strengthens my belief that feminism is just a sexual strategy. They wouldn't stand up for anything that does not go with their main goal I.e. The implementation of their sexual strategy.

rp_valiant 9y ago
turning private deprives reddit of the ad views and gold from that subreddit for the day. If it were only small subreddits no difference would be made but a blackout of the major subs has the potential to seriously disrupt reddit's bottom line.

I'm so fucking tired of this "everyone has to conform to political correctness" agenda.
My IP address got banned from r/funny for the following:
There was a picture of a woman hunched over the toilet puking (because she's pregnant) and a man close by in a chair with his head in his hands, seemingly devistated that his wife is pregnant (and a small child holding a jar of Preggo (so we all understand the context)), and I commented:
"Oh I get it, the woman is pregnant and the man has his head in his hands indicating that he is not happy about it. Hardy har har". (Because "jokes" like this have been beaten to death).
My comment ended up getting around 10 or so upvotes from people clearly feeling the same as me but I still ended up getting banned from r/funny without even an email to explain which "rule" I violated. I logged out and tried to see if I could get into r/funny that way but no dice.

This is a very extreme and absolute view, but there are some feminists that are productive (ex: 20th century)
I think that you meant to say is that once feminists knows that she dropped the one basket where she had all her eggs, she tries to take downs as many people as she can on her way down. The collateral damage that feminists do once they are ousted is ridiculous.

You might want to look into first wave feminism.
Susan B Anthony was a piece of shit and the British suffragettes took break from campaigning for the vote during WWI to hand out white feathers to shame British men into joining the army and going off to their deaths in the trenches, knowing full well that women wouldn't have to endure front line combat.
First wave feminists were campaigning for the vote MINUS the draft.
So yeah, even 20th century feminists were selfish hypocrites.

I, for one, will be happy to see Reddit dissolve. It is a vile cesspool of low quality content and low quality users.
That being said, it has formed a useful community for TheRedPill (and certain other small sub-communities) simply due to its format.
I wish the owners of Puearchy would at least add a simple forum so we can continue TRP discussions and posts over there. As it is, there is no forum on the web dedicated to TRP besides this subreddit. If Puearchy won't implement a TRP forum then someone else should.

The pathetic thing is that Reddit had such a massive user-base and successful format already that they would not need to be that competent to continue to grow. As long as they didn't go full sjw with their staff and corporate policies, and had a few cool outgoing people like Victoria as admins to interact with the community(you wouldn't even have to pay them much!) they could have coasted on their success just fine.
Its not like this was a real tech or manufacturing company that needs smart people to stay on top.
CSMastermind 9y ago
What really gets me is that she clearly doesn't know how to use the website. She tried to post a link to a PM in her inbox. That's like when your grandma tries to email you a photo but it's just the C:\ path on the her computer to get to it.
I understand that as CEO you aren't in the weeds coding but you would think she would know something about the company she's running. I can't imagine Bill McDermott not understanding the basics of accounting or Paul Jacobs not knowing how to use a cellphone.

redpillschool Admin 9y ago
I wonder what would've happened with gasp a male ceo?
TomHicks 9y ago
Probably nothing different. The problem is they're trying to commercialize, and to do that they have to sanitize their image. Oh, and cut costs.
niczar 9y ago
I've seen NPDs like her in power, men as well as female, they can be just as damaging. Not a gender issue IMO.
cover20 9y ago
I'd support Victoria Taylor for CEO. It may be needed to save Reddit, and we can see she was doing a fine job.
London-Bananas 9y ago
Not saying Pao is doing a terrific job but there really is a large difference between being an admin and the CEO of a company
cover20 9y ago
And what was Pao's CEO experience before this? Kleiner offered her operating experience, but she turned it down insisting on being an investing partner instead.
Please explain how Reddit, with a stable userbase and operating environment, would founder in the three months it would take an intelligent layman to get going as CEO. Reddit basically runs itself which is why Pao could be plugged in there as a sop and to support her as she continues to do her damage, rather than just being bankrupt and going away as she should.
Moridakkubokka 9y ago
She seems very nice and all but her as ceo? calm down, all she did was have interviews with some celebs and write things.
She doesn't have the qualifications for the job I'd think.
[deleted]
colucci 9y ago
I don't care, honestly. As I said, let's put gender issues aside, and to learn a thing or two on what not to do as the chief of a company. I'm sure there are male ceos that would have made a bigger mess of all this.
redpillschool Admin 9y ago
Pushing SJW issues over the future of your business? I haven't seen it before, but if I were a betting man, I'd say it was likely also done by women.
This is a strictly female ideal. Feels before reals.

What's interesting is that before Pao married her husband (who's accused of civil fraud, and filed a racial discrimination lawsuit which he lost, similar to Pao's failed lawsuit), he was in an openly gay long-term relationship for 10 years.

But apparently homophobia doesn't exist because that's a buzzword, right?
MaxManus 9y ago
Doesn't homophobic mean to be afraid of gay people?
grue2593 9y ago
Some brilliant mother fucker edited every instance of Pao's name to Adolf Hitler on that wiki page. Well done.
rp_valiant 9y ago
eeh, I don't find that too surprising considering bisexuality is a thing. These two are certainly a dynamic duo though - both large-scale scam artists in their own ways, and yet Pao is determined to construct some kind of moral high ground on the fertile hills of Redditville.
throwaway1643 9y ago
Yeah I agree, of course people are free to have whatever sexual preference they want, but what's curious is that up until he got married he lived his entire life as a gay man (not bisexual, mind you). That's highly unusual.
Incredible con-artists, and the way Pao was able to spin the media to portray her in a sympathetic light in her court case is remarkable.

She is a woman in power, so anyone who disagrees can be straw-manned into being a misogynist. And because the subs that got the most complaints were banned, the vocal minority got what they wanted to spite what most of reddit couldn't care less about.

Not atypically, the person she put under the bus is a woman. That's the same thing she did at Kleiner.

It would be interesting to see who claims all of the new mod positions if that happens. SRS seems to have mastered the art of "squatting" themselves into mod slots.
aa223 9y ago
It really doesn't matter what is done because I think people are more angry that Victoria was fired suddenly without notice rather than Victoria being fired. So this whole protest solidarity bullshit is pretty much keyboard warrior 2.0 and once they get someone new and everything is under control then people will forget this ever happened and good day. Honestly, if people cared they would protest against the censorship and Chairman Pao's policies and it would have been done a long time ago.
I have an aversion to people like these mods who went dark because they think they are making a difference when really deep down inside they want to feel like they are a part of something and this is a part of something but this something will have no real impact except to get voat a few more converts. I'm just going to go on my day as usual and watch it will be as if nothing happened.
Tom_The_Human 9y ago
Remember when the internet collectively told the government to go fuck itself over SOPA? Whatever happened to that internet?
[deleted]
libertypole 9y ago
unless i've missed something, the reasons for her being fired are all speculation.
this boycott seems like one of those useless rallies where everyone gets to make their cute sign and feel all important and self-righteous. then some news person asks the protestors what they are protesting and it's clear they have no idea what the fuck they're doing. why get involved when you don't even know what you're crusading for? this victoria person deserved it for all i know.
TheQuon 9y ago
Pretty much. I would however love to be a fly on the wall as Reddit HQ discusses this gigantic fucking hole they just discovered in their business model where the user base can just arbitrarily shut them down at any perceived slight. $100 says they remove the "private" feature of subs.

rp_valiant 9y ago
it's being actively documented in online journals as we speak. For example: https://archive.is/9cfy6

There wasn't one "bad moment" for JJ in that AMA. The whole thing was just a destruction of him from beginning to end, after he spouts nothing but the liberal orthodoxy of the worst sort. He deserved all of it.
What was Taylor supposed to do, censor everyone?
WAFC 9y ago
Got my tinfoil hat on this morning.
I don't buy it. For a month or so now reddit has been losing parts of its userbase over censorship issues. Now the mods are angry with the administration over similar issues. Subs like KotakuInAction and the like are already blowing up over this. People are picking sides....but the fight is reddit vs. reddit, and admins vs. mods (where aggrieved users pick sides and reddit can control both sides of the narrative) is a great tactic to stem the tide.
The longer it goes on the more convinced I will be, but for now I'm skeptical.
trp_angry_dwarf 9y ago
2x isn't going dark though. not even talking about it. They know they're safe.
[deleted] 9y ago
There's plenty of safe subs gone dark in solidarity they don't talk about it because they're a bunch of women.
Half of Reddit was shut and everyone in 2x and askwomen were like errrrrr wtf going on guys?! Half of them didn't know what an iama is or what the problem with Ellen pao was.
It happened already, it's done and they're all like "is this like a thing? Omg it's like totally bizzare rite?".
Rathadin 9y ago
What did you expect? Women can't be bothered with actual issues, they're busy crying to other women.
alkyjason 9y ago
Boo-fucking-hoo.
The only reason there is this level of unrest is because she is a female and apparently she was liked a lot by the community. So all the white-knight neckbeards are rallying in support.
Funny there wasn't this much outrage when FPH was banned but now, because it involves something that reddit generally likes, everyone is all butt-hurt.
[deleted] 9y ago
You don't spend much time around here, do you?
Flyingbuffaloman 9y ago
There is unrest because she was the only person assigned to a critical role and there was no attempt made to replace her or notify anyone of her firing.
cover20 9y ago
Yes, that is gross incompetence by upper management. But maybe Pao had to do it this way because she had no support from others in upper management. Which in itself indicates Pao should be let go.
[deleted] 9y ago
Wouldn't the greatest irony of all, be if TRP left reddit of its own volition, because of how shitty it (reddit) has become? Instead of being shutdown.
THAT would send a message. I'm not advocating it, because I'm used to it being here. But this is an interesting development.
JORGA 9y ago
Reddit as a whole wouldn't give a shit if trp left, that's just the plain truth.
In the grand scale this sub is rather insignificant
diythrow24234 9y ago
How would former blue pillars even know where to go? Finding TRP was only because I was on reddit in the first place.
[deleted] 9y ago
I want to clarify: I don't want this place going anywhere. I just would find it somewhat poetic. As far as how would former BPs find TRP, I'm hoping they would find it the same way I found it. Via google and blogs relevant to the topics of their interest. You have to earn your way.
redpillschool Admin 9y ago
Our position is that we will not be leaving reddit unless a shut down is imminent or has happened. However, we may be opening our replacement forums for archives and user registration early.
[deleted] 9y ago
I'm glad. It's reddit drama that we needn't be involved with anyway. I just always thought TRP would go out in a widely publicized banning, not that reddit would start eating itself from the inside out.

majorasmaskfan 9y ago
how is a rich capitalist ceo a radical feminist?
TheQuon 9y ago
Because it is very profitable. Fat chicks are leading consumers in today's market. Reddit is going tumblr'ing down the rabbit hole.
theHangedGod 9y ago
She's not a capitalist, she's a totalitarian.
She received Reddit and instead of enforcing the rules the community wants, she enforces her own.
She's like the president of Reddit where there is no judicial or legislative branch to check her privilege.
majorasmaskfan 9y ago
A capitalist wants to maximize profit, coon town does not do that, though thats capitalism coincidentally lining up with the moral thing, if racism made it more money then coon town would be a default. any way the working class should control the means of production.
rp_valiant 9y ago
I don't know - maybe you should ask Pao. Or Marissa Mayer. Or Sheryl Sandberg.
feminism is a power grab. Capitalism is a money/power grab. The two are far from mutually exclusive.
CSMastermind 9y ago
I wouldn't lump Marissa Mayer in with the other two, they're pretty different. Mayer has gotten all sorts of shit from feminists for things including stating that she isn't one.

This will blow over soon enough. IAMA will change back pretty soon and the stream of people joining 'VOAT' will be minimal. Even though a fair amount of people dislike Ellen Pao, things will not get bad enough for reddit to fold / implode.
The Red Pill sub will even stay here. There are no indications that the sub will be banned (as long as we keep to ourselves). Sign up for the mailing regardless. Fail safes are a good thing.
[deleted] 9y ago
No. Nothing will be changed back. The vast majority of users on this site are utterly apathetic losers. They'll rant and rave for a day or two, then everything will go back to whatever Pao wants it to be. She'll stay on as interim and be confirmed in her job, and work towards seriously PG-ing reddit to monetize it completely. In two years, it'll be unrecognizable.
rp_valiant 9y ago
I would agree wholeheartedly if it hadn't been for the implosion of Digg and StumbleUpon that both happened from relatively small issues. It's yet another brick to add to the wall Pao is building between herself and the community she manages, and at some point people will get fed up and leave. I can't predict when it'll happen, or if reddit will get back on track before Pao sets sail down shit creek, but I know that the direction we're headed in at the moment can't be sustained indefinitely. There's a lot of unpleasant content on reddit that I'm sure Pao would love to ban but there'll come a tipping point where reddit is no longer considered a neutral community dedicated to free speech and people will start finding new homes for their forums.
ThrowingMyslfOutther 9y ago
You mean the community that provides ALL of the content she makes her paychecks from?
[deleted]
JanLul 9y ago
Yet look at YouTube after Google took over. So many different things that had almost everyone in the communities fed up. VOAT does not seem like a solid alternative.

savedarticles 9y ago
lol at everyone getting worked up over a fucking website. The community can reside anywhere. Reddit is just a host. Don't let this bother you to much. Go improve your lives. Leave reddit politics to the poor souls that have to deal with it(our mods)
London-Bananas 9y ago
In another thread there was a mod or admin (don't remember) who said Pao kicked Victoria to the curb because she didn't agree with radical (monetization) changes in the AmA style. This included doing video AmAs ($$$$$ + easier brigading).
This is also in line with the banning of FPH. If you want to make serious bucks, you can't have hate against 30-40% of the population reaching your front page, or you might find yourself with tentacle grape juice advertisements.
TheQuon 9y ago
That is exactly why FPH was banned but TRP and other arguably more "distasteful" subs were ignored. FPH posts made the front page daily. If TRP ever became that popular it'd be gone fast.
dr_warlock 9y ago
The fact that 40% fit that description is disturbing. We need more fat hate
[deleted] 9y ago
More like 60% if my trip to the local mall was any indicator.
cover20 9y ago
I don't understand, probably because I am clueless:
[deleted] 9y ago
1.AMAs are publicised on the social media accounts of those who the AMA is about. This means their followers are able to come to reddit, create accounts and down vote dissenting or hard line comments and questions in the AMA.
FPH or r/fatpeoplehate was a sub dedicated to hating fat people and their fatness. It was removed by the admins under the guise of the subreddit harassing people, however there was no such thing being done. As a matter of fact it was actively discouraged. The real reason is that reddit is trying to become a major advertising platform and the existence of a sub that hates on 40% of the population wouldn't fly with advertisers who pay big money.
London-Bananas 9y ago
The tentacle grape juice was a reference to 4chan. Because of their... unique.. content, they have always had much trouble finding good advertisers despite their large userbase. J-List, famous for the tentacle grape juice ads, has been their main advertiser for years now.

Developer here: Apache Cordova will literally let you recycle your webpage code into a cross-platform mobile app. For speed and hitting all the target devices (windows phone, iOS, Android), this would be ideal for a crisis situation. One person could have your app up in a week or less.
cocaine_face 9y ago
You can do it all at PhoneGap Build - which is run by Adobe and runs on Cordova, without having to setup Cordova at all. You'd have to purchase an Apple Developer account ($100) to make an iPhone app though.
That being said, if he has content that is being updated and expecting local access to certain resources (such as a database - which if he has multiple users and a forum, I'm absolutely guessing he has), he'll have to rewrite that to take advantage of a restful service (and setup that restful service) or something.
Overzealous_BlackGuy 9y ago

redpillschool Admin 9y ago
Yup. It will be announced on puerarchy.com

redpillschool Admin 9y ago
It uses reddit api to verify your name, so you gotta be logged into the same account you're verifying when you do it. If the names don't match up, no go.
cocaine_face 9y ago
Is there a PHP library to access the Reddit API? The only languages I saw were Javascript, Python and Java.
HS-Thompson 9y ago
I've been involved in Internet communities since they were all green text on a black background. They are all expendable and they all come and go naturally, and one constant is that people make way too big a deal out of it when they do.
diythrow24234 9y ago
Is reddit different though? Because it has millions of users and is one of the most populated sites on the www
HS-Thompson 9y ago
The AOL communities were a way bigger deal than Reddit in terms of the percentage of all the internet community discussion they represented. There are also some truly massive BBS communities out there (Flyertalk comes to mind as a good example, or some of the huge car enthusiast forums) that are on a scale that compares with Reddit. This site is certainly a big deal but big deals come and go.
oldredder 9y ago
reddit is not different. It's already replaced most of the high-value users with low-value sheep and it won't be long before it's forgotten.

reelsies 9y ago
I hope that this event puts a large dent in reddit's usership, but even if it does, it will be for the wrong reasons.
Mods abuse their power regularly, so the whole fiasco just seems like an argument of power between the powerful/corrupt and the even more powerful/corrupt.
And reddit users just follow along because they're sheep, and will support anything edgy as long as it has a veneer of legitimacy and enough popularity behind it.
aazav 9y ago
Do we know for a fact that Ellen is responsible for OKing the firing or for ordering it?
cover20 9y ago
If she's not, it's still her fault because she should have enough control that bad things don't happen without her knowledge.
She is CEO. It is by definition her fault, unless the Board reached in and ordered it.
aazav 9y ago
If the board reached in, they have bigger problems. Hiring and firing matters should NEVER get to the board.
BenchoteMankoManko 9y ago
Literally never heard of her in 3 years, she was no one of worth
cover20 9y ago
I never heard of her either, but her stuff was a big part of the Reddit brand. That's because she was doing her job superbly.
rp_valiant 9y ago
dial back on the self-importance there buddy - I had never heard of her either but from reading about the controversy she was well liked by a lot of moderators on some of the more prominent default threads. Admins work in the background, they're not likely to interact with individual users unless they're moderators.
sushisection 9y ago
You may not know who she is, but you have seen her work. Those AMAs you like to read? That's all her. She was the sole person who made that shit run smoothly, behind the scenes, and now she's gone.
duckspeed 9y ago
She was a hardcore SJW, always toeing the line, never asking the hard questions. Not the hero you're looking for.
rp_valiant 9y ago
you have to recognise that AMA is a PR opportunity for these public figures. Sure, she filtered out hard or offensive questions on some occasions, I don't doubt that, but the point is she made some moderators' jobs easier.
She's certainly not my hero - I'm simply here to report my point of view on current proceedings and the direction reddit seems to be taking (and therefore the impact on TRP). This single incident doesn't mean a thing to me.
cover20 9y ago
If she was invisible how do you know that? Or do you have some inside info? What hard questions to whom?
She allowed the audience enough space to rake JJ over the coals on this AMA.
BenchoteMankoManko 9y ago
If the sun shines out her ass like you praise her for then she must have fucked something up to get dropped
cover20 9y ago
That's not how corporate politics works. Very often.
rp_valiant 9y ago
praise her? I'm literally reporting what other people have said. If you are upset that other people who aren't you are being praised, take it up with the moderators of iAMA.
BenchoteMankoManko 9y ago
In the end she did nothing of worth, she will be forgotten in a few days
170612 9y ago
If you ever read AMAs you would've heard of her.
AMAs are one of the most popular and universally talked about things Reddit does. And she was pretty much the reason they were able to happen successfully. The guys who run that sub confirm that.
Not sure why you're so determined to say someone you never heard of was bad at their job when the people who did work with her and read her sub are saying the opposite.

Left bandwagon of political correctness is on! People will wear rainbow colors panties soon! New freedoms are about to come to existence.
Freedoms where nobody is offended because nobody is not even talking! Feminism and leftism are doing the only thing they know how to do - destroying.
Everything is going down. Straight male shaming is a thing and it will be just worse.
Save yourself and hold you pants - we are going to need it.

Pao's feefees were hurt. So someone's head must role regardless of larger impact. This is completely in line with what we've all learned from this godsend of a sub.
I_Am_My_Own_God 9y ago
Another fine example of what happens when you allow women into male spaces. Alex and Aaron created something great but it may very well be ruined because of some cunt on a SJW power trip.
[deleted] 9y ago
Whenever a feminist starts whining about equality, it's nice to know that women are actually given opportunities left and right, and they just fuck it all up too badly.

This situation is very fun, and reminds me a lot of the beautiful fable "The scorpion and the frog".
The morons at the top of reddit tried to pander so much to the feminists, and now they are getting attacked by those same feminists they tried to mellow in the past.

I'd rather see a democratic reddit alternative.
I imagine a non-profit organization, with a board of directors making all important decisions. Users would be encouraged to become members for a nominal fee, allowing them to vote in board member elections.

I'm confused but The Blue Pill is still up and open from what I can tell, so is iAmA.
undead_keyboard 9y ago
You're late to the party. Things have calmed down.
Sir_Shitlord_focker 9y ago
kinda of a storm in a glass type of situation ?
[deleted] 9y ago
So we should be spamming the creation of new subreddits with names similar to fatpeoplehate?

You left out the theory of Victoria's dissent.

Video AMAs would definitely be a mistake. Unless you're trained in public speaking, witty on the fly, and how to deflect attacks on the spot, that would definitely go wrong. Plus text allows someone to think a long time before they speak, creating a thoughful answer instead of something built in 2 seconds of thinking.

thanks, I hadn't seen that - I'll edit this in and continue to add any further notes that surface in the comments.

that's not what this post is about really - it's about the Pao administration's continual mishandling of reddit community relations and the beginnings of a downward spiral. I didn't know who she was yesterday and continue to not care today - it's more about reading between the lines.

I couldn't care less.
rp_valiant 9y ago
that's fine, feel free to move along to another post. Your comment doesn't contribute anything though.

How is this related to TRP at all? This sub isn't for circle-jerking over reddit drama...
Tom_The_Human 9y ago
It could be seen as meta and serving to aware the users of TRP to potential censorship.
