It's been a while since I made a post here but I'm one hundred percent sure most you will be interested in hearing this.
Quick background about me, if you've seen my posts before you'll know that I started a business at a young age and made myself financially independent since the age of seventeen. That said, I often have these strange moments where I sit and study a subject just to learn more about it. This is how I've become who I am today. Something interests me or something seems strange to me and I begin researching and studying it. Lets begin.
I started watching a TV show called Better Call Saul, the breaking bad prequel. It's essentially about the world of Lawyers and other criminal activities. It was this show that first brought my attention to the difference in position just by body language and clothing.
Please note that I'm condensing a full essay down into a simple reddit post. I had prepared image examples for this but I honestly can't be bothered posting them. I'll stick with explaining.
Essentially I have been studying the concept of status in the workplace. Why was it that certain people were often treated better than others? I'm not talking in terms of friendliness. Most of the time people will be at the very basic, kind with each other. However why was it that the nicer people are more often stepped upon or disregarded for interest.
I then came to the realisation that how you dress and how you present yourself i.e the employee mindset, is what defines the position you have. This may sound like something simple which everybody knows but it's much more heavy than people realise.
The Employee Mindset:
-
You see yourself as an employee doing a job
-
You rely on a single paycheck for income
-
You see your bosses as people of higher status
-
You need to work hard to follow in their footsteps
- You wait for instructions
The above is the employee mindset in my perspective. You should never ever be like that. I don't care what job you are doing, always be the opposite.
With this in mind, I sat down and thought about this. If my theory is actually sound then it should work flawlessly. I always test my concepts out before revealing them to others. I decided to apply for a high level job.
Keep in mind, I have never worked before. I have no CV/Resume. I had to make one on the spot and list zero experience. (The only thing I had in that section was the self employment work). I also listed a few programming languages in the skills section.
I then went ahead and applied to big companies. Law firms, business firms etc. I have never studied these subjects in my life. Within 3 days I received responses. All asking for interviews or on the odd case, a little puzzle to solve via email.
There was one that actually got my attention. Honestly, I would have taken this job if I genuinely had the time. It was a huge business firm in the city with their own massive building. It actually looked like one of the big buildings in the TV shows.
I email back and forth with the recruitment lady who informs me of the process; a telephone interview then if successful, a live interview.
We set a date for the phone interview and I decided to do my research on the company.
They day came and the phone interview began. Skipping the unnecessary details, I got the job. The only problem was that I'm currently finishing my degree and they would like me to come full time. We scheduled something for next year.
So how the hell did I do it?
-
The recruiter listed a youtube link in her email which I assume was the standard deal in all their professional works. The thing is, I actually clicked on the linked and went through their videos. I then went onto their website and studied every damn tab and section. There was even an events section for those interested in attending an event.
- During the interview, when talking about why I applied for the job I used the word "Selected" not "Applied". When you apply for something, you are pulling a string hoping that you get the thing. When you select something you choose it because you had so many others.
Example: "I applied for a car."
"I selected a car."
Selected implies that you have many options, this is what job recruiters are not used to. In their view, they have the power over you because they have the job and you often need the job. Saying that you selected their job erases that power.
- I told her that I would like to provide value to their business. I even went as far as to tell her that I signed up for a few of the events so that I can go and learn more. This completely surprised the woman. Again, recruiters are often used to your average person standing on tip toes hoping that they get the job. They are always interested in how much of a paycheck they will get and how long their hours will be. The word "Value" is never used. By using that, you will instantly separate yourself from everyone else.
At this point she had already told me that the job was perfect for me if I was willing to take it. She had completely skipped the live interview process.
Now even in a live interview, the same concepts still apply. All you need to do is speak to them on an equal level. Be realistic. If you come in there sucking their feet, it doesn't guarantee you a job, all you would have done is sucked some feet only to be rejected.
Being in my position, I have hired people before. I have my own employees and that is exactly how I treated the situation. I spoke to the recruiter in an Employer to Employer way. Not Employer to Employee.
Another thing I made certain to do was to speak to this woman by her first name. Again, most people you speak to on the phone or in an interview don't expect you to remember their name. To them it isn't important, they are there to interview You. Using their name hits them with reality. (I have often used this when talking to paypal/ebay workers. It makes them go the extra mile to help me.)
Example: "Hmm that's a very good question Sarah. I became interested in this subject since..."
^ That was an actual line I said to the recruiter on the phone. Reading that carefully does that look like a desperate man hoping for a job acceptance?
Here is a mock Interview that shows the basic power concept. The guy is completely subjecting himself to the woman. He is essentially saying "Here is what I can do, please hire me." He is trying to prove himself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_dxlajqA4s
When you get into the interview, you don't need to prove yourself. Assume you already have the job and be confident in that stride.
I hope this was beneficial to at least someone. If you would like to read my full study which goes into body language, High Status, High status seating and even NLP (neuro linguistic programming) just drop me a message.
Here is also a great article on high status seating that I believe everyone should read: http://westsidetoastmasters.com/resources/book_of_body_language/chap17.html
Cheers
EDIT------
A few of the groups I mentor have recommended that I create some sort of blog where everyone can come and read what I have to say. I decided to also share it here.
https://absentmasculinity.com/
It's a basic WordPress blog with no bullshit popups, course nonsense or motivational speeches. I give methods not motivation. You won't find tips on how to text girls so if that is your interest, the blog won't be for you.
I should also add that this blog is partly catered to the groups I mentor in which I teach them ways to be successful and stand out from the crowd. You may find my terminology there to be a little harsher than it is here on Reddit. You are also free to contact me over there if you have any direct inquires.

You had me until “Keep in mind I have never worked before.”
I admire the intent and I’m glad you’re watching the best lawyer drama in history, but regardless of the advice, I just can’t take it seriously just like I can’t take love advice from a guy who’s never been laid.
Thizzlebot 6y ago
My thoughts exactly. Also it doesn't say what the "job" was. He could be this d-bag acting like this big shot "selecting" jobs when he's applying to be a custodians of the janitorial arts.
Lendoran 6y ago
The better call saul line makes no sense due to the fact that I summarised this study into a post. Initially when I was writing it, I had images ready to portray the difference in body language, posture and behaviour etc. Whilst writing the post I decided to cut all of that out and just focus on the important information.
The never working before part merely refers to never working for someone else. I sat from 12pm to 4am every day programming for $16. I didn't know at that point that I would get any higher of an income. That is what is important.
magnificentshambles 6y ago
How was that “$16” amount quantified, exactly?
green_tea_bag 6y ago
He has run his business since he was seventeen. I don't know how long that has been, but that was work. I think he means: hasn't had traditional employment. He made some good points further down.

My dad’s motto, “if you only have one job and you’re not the boss, you’re one job away from not having a job” always have an ace in hole.
I thank fucking god I had him as a mentor teaching me trades so I can moonlight building decks and fences. Just made 2k labor and 750 in profit this week from a deck job and about to get paid at my full time :). If shit hits the fan, I have a huge leg up being completely autonomous continuing to build for a growing network of referrals
I walk into interviews for a refresher and ask right away how can I help out in a tight bind and how can I add value. Job offers for days. If you can add value and know the details, skys the limit
Lendoran 6y ago
That is absolutely brilliant. The motto itself is even better, I'm adding it to my notes as I type this.
Such a brilliant way of looking at it, I hope things continue to get better for you man!

What is your experience with NLP? I remember when it was all the rage, people going to institutes to get degrees and stuff. Now you never really hear about it. I was doing a bit of research recently and found out that NLP never found any scientific proof for any of its claims so it just naturally faded out. What NLP technique do you know of that produces 100% repeatable results?
Lendoran 6y ago
NLP is dead interesting. I was sharing this study with an older classmate of mine who actually brought up the topic of NLP. He told me some pretty darn interesting things which I'll share in my next post!

Confidence and how you view yourself is huge. It's frame control. You frame how you see yourself, to how the world sees you, and they go along with it.
uwey 6y ago
Confidence and self-esteem is actually effect by childhood experience.
From birth to age 6, that experience in home and how much attention and love you receive can actually determine your social class. If you have traditional family value and caring, wealthy, well educated family, and then you will have much better self esteem.
Idunnowhy2 6y ago
As a child, your parents are instilling their idea of who you are and what you deserve. Their frame on you becomes your frame of yourself.
But you always have the choice to take control of the frame.
TrillegitimateSon 6y ago
the thought of children terrify me purely because my parents didn't know how to parent and I don't want continue the cycle. It really fucks with your head and I've had to consciously work on the consequences of their lack of preperation.

Yes and yes.
But it is really mind boggling to see how social caste was form during very early stage of life, and how hard to reprogram and reworked the mind that believes his/her own place in society.

I have one genuine question to people around here that make good posts but don’t provide actual information to support their story or whatever: why?
Being abstract about it comes off as something you made up in your mind. Obviously some guys here are autistic and brag about their “awesome pussy slayer life” (it’s easy to identify a lie) while they’re fapping compulsively and eating Cheetos.
But if you really are crushing it, why don’t you provide tangible informations? (this and this happened in XYZ city, my name is X etc).
Just curious.
Lendoran 6y ago
One of my biggest annoyances is that of people who go into what I call "Auto-rejection" for any sort of information. Believe it or not, after sharing this topic with a number of people, I decided to share it with one of my close friends.
Now I knew that this would be tricky as he often seems to go into auto rejection but I did regardless. As you can imagine, he challenged everything I said, not on the actual content but on whether or not I actually got the job asking for evidence of emails and such.
This is a guy who has known me for years. KNOWS how much I make and all I've done yet he still rejects what I say.
What I would suggest to you is to do what I do. Listen to what a person is saying. So long as they are not asking you for your money or personal information, you have absolutely nothing to lose. There is no need to question the post.
If I read a post on the internet about how to become a millionare and it's free and doesn't involve me putting myself at risk, what did I lose?
Lambdal7 6y ago
This is a good start, but you're still in a sellers frame, get into a buyer's frame. Add these questions
All in all, you need to interview them.
However, you need to show a little competence beforehand, let them do their interview thing and flip the script naturally so that they don't even notice and at the end you're interviewing them and they're trying to qualify themselves to you.
Then at the end you can say, obliviously, ok so can I think it over and get back to you next week?
You are the selector, not them. This works all companies, Google, Microsoft, IBM, because interviewers don't have good social skills, nor a strong frame or any inner game the vast majority of the time.
However, you do need some competence, professionalism, know how to talk formally and be somewhat serious, though interesting.
If you're a twitchy college grad, they will think you're playing a game and it will make you look weird.

Started a business three years ago now, haven't looked back. Sales changed my life.
I was just reading over on the "Lost Generation" reddit, and man is it a cesspool of losers complaining about basically employee life. Everything's the rich people's fault. The economy's fault. What a sad sack of losers.
You make your own paycheck. People have tons of excuses. There's money, then there's excuses. Pick one. People who come up with excuses are simply leaving cash on the table for people who have stronger will in the moment.

An employee needs to be told what to do and sometimes watched in order to carry out the job.
An employer know what has to be done, sets about doing so with skills/ability, and does not need to be supervised to do the job.
It is possible to both be an employee and an employer. All employers are employees. Not all employees are employers.

I have a degree in neuroscience and let me tell you: Humans don't produce pheromones. It's a gimmick by the cologne industry. We don't have a vomeronasal organ to sense pheromones- an organ that every other known animal with pheromones has.

Reinvented_Myself 6y ago
as someone with a degree in neuroscience, we don't have pheromones. It's a gimmick that is sold to you by the cologne industry and other people who aren't aware that humans don't use pheromones
chrisname 6y ago
We don't? We have scent glands in our armpits and crotch, and hair to trap the smell. We have automatic and emotional responses such as sexual arousal to smells, can detect substances like MHC, and our sweat contains thousands of aromatic organic chemicals whose effect on the body is unstudied (but it's noteworthy that they are only excreted where we have scent glands and hair to trap the odours). At least one study found that women prefer the smell of t-shirts worn by men with more testosterone, and another found that men can tell when women are ovulating or menstruation. Don't these sound like signs that we are using pheromones?
Edit: Wikipedia cites this article as saying that humans do have a vomeronasal organ, but it's underdeveloped although we do use chemical communication. I couldn't access the article though.
Reinvented_Myself 6y ago
keywork scent glands. pheromones act in the vomeronasal organ, not the olfactory epithelium. The smells on those shirts were just smells. Take androstenone for example. a pheromone in pigs that triggers behaviors, is just a scent to us humans, because we lack a vomeronasal organ. the MHC stuff is related to attraction based on immune systems, and how humans are attracted to people with immune systems different from their own. that's not pheromones as far as we know.
from wikipedia on androstenone : "Detectability as a pheromone In humans, androstenone also has been suggested to be a pheromone; however, there is little scientific data to support this claim.[15] The vomeronasal organ is an auxiliary olfactory sense organ responsible for the detection of pheromones as more than just an odor. Most adult humans possess something resembling this organ, but there is no active function. Humans lack the sensory cells that exist in other mammals needed to detect pheromones beyond a smell. Humans also lack the genetic ability to produce these sensory cells actively"
we lost the vomeronasal organ somewhere in our evolutionary pathway. also, androstenone smells like ass.
So pheromones to humans are just smells. we can use cheap old spice deodorant for that if we're trying to attract women.
chrisname 6y ago
OK, so they're not pheromones because they don't trigger automatic behaviours.

I don't know how three weeks is possible. If I go more than like five days it happens in my sleep, which I obviously have no real control over.

It’s as simple or as hard as you want to make it. Of course, it takes some flexing of the discipline muscle, but once you get going and see the small, everyday benefits as opposed to the momentary pleasure... You don’t want to stop. It’s like lifting.
sharp7 6y ago
It wont happen every 5 days. You will do it in your sleep once after 5 days then the next time will be like 2 weeks then after that a month etc. Unless you keep fapping inbetween.

Meh, I'm an employee who makes about a quarter million a year in an area where that is quite a bit.
The key, is to simply make sure you are paid what you are worth. Most hourly, and even salary positions won't allow you to do this. Most of the workers, all doing different amounts and quality of work, will be paid fairly close to the same.
This is why I am so adament about learning the art of sales. I am a dirty, slimy, mother fucking car salesman, and love every minute of it. In less than three years, I have become one of the highest grossing sales reps for the largest auto group in the state I reside. Why do I love sales so much? Because it is one of the only careers you can walk into without a degree, and make well over six figures. In sales, you will be paid EXACTLY what you are worth, and there is no limit other than your own damn self.
Now, you aren't just going to fall into making that much selling cars without a great deal of effort, time, and fuck ups along the way. If you practice, and work your ass off. You can easily become a top sales rep and get paid very well. I won't take a management position because I get paid more than my boss. The first year, I worked six twelve hour days a week. Sometimes if I was doing very well, I would take an extra day.
I don't think there is anything wrong with being an employee. The problem is when you are an employee that isn't being paid what they are worth, and are basically being taken advantage of.

Read the book "The Closers" by Ben Gay. It really opened my eyes about how to become a master closer salesman. It's the only book you need. Read it 5 times, internalize it. It will blow your mind and make you infinitely successful. This book is recommended by a million dollar copywriter Gary Halbert. While you're at it, read his newsletters at thegaryhalbertletter.com. This guy is the best copywriter that ever lived. He made more millionaires than anyone else.
[deleted] 6y ago
Are you in sales?
Can't argue with Gary Halbert recommendation, I'm trying to be a professional copywriter.
subthrowaway321 6y ago
There's nothing to teach. Well, there are the steps to the sale which you should know. Other than that, it is mostly your attitude and work ethic that dictate the level of success you will or won't have.
People like to act like there is some magic process or set of words in just the right order that makes some people successful in sales. This is simply not true. People like to think there is a trick to it, or that some people just have "it." They do this because of their own failures in the industry and don't want to take responsibility for their inability to close deals. If they can chalk it up to some magical force in the ether, they don't have to examine their behaviors or take personal responsibility for not being successful. They'll tell themselves, some people have it, and some don't. I am one who doesnt have it. Once you say that to yourself or start thinking like that, you're done. If you believe that it is out of your control, you can't take actions to correct what you are doing wrong. That's why it is so important to understand their isn't a trick to sales. There is hard work, long hours, and learning to fail everyday. I fail closing deals all the time. I only close about 25% of the people I get to my desk. So, to get one deal, I need to talk to about 8-10 people. Of those ten, six or so will test drive. Of those six, 3-4 will want to sit down and see numbers. Of those 3-4 people, one will probably buy. So, if I want to sell ten cars, I need to talk to about 100 people, and so on.
[deleted] 6y ago
thanks man, pretty interesting. Good luck with everything
Frenetic_Zetetic 6y ago
Sales is the only career you'll ever need. Can confirm. Amazes me this isn't more of a focal point on TRP.
subthrowaway321 6y ago
There is a lot of risk involved in trying sales as a career. Hell, I fell flat on my face at the first two dealerships I worked at. I almost gave up after that, but I'm glad that I didn't. Simply not giving up and putting everything you have into it, especially in the face of failure, is what sets a "salesman" apart from the people who just work there and sell the occasional vehicle. I failed for over two years at car sales until I figured it out and became successful.

the99percent1 6y ago
Look at it this way.. people or entities pay for perceived value.
If you offer something truly special and of high value to a company, why wouldnt they pay premium dollar for it?
Likewise, if your product cost a million dollars, but in return generates 10 million dollars or saves more money than it costs. Again, why wouldn't someone pay you top dollars for it.

There isn't a magic bullet for sales. It really is, hard work, be at the store to sell stuff. That's about it. If you aren't at the store, you can't sell anything. So, you have to be willing to put in the hours. I do about 5, 10-12 hour shifts now.
I see so many people fail at this simply because they can't motivate themselves when there isn't a boss telling them what to do. They sit on their phones all day, complaining no one is coming to the store. All the while, I'm writing emails, making phone calls, training, learning inventory, etc. In sales, it is up to the individual to be successful or not.
Another thing I'll see people do that holds them back from doing even better and being one of the best. They will close a big fat commission deal on Monday. Then, for the rest of the week, don't do much because in their mind, they already closed a big deal for a couple thousand and don't "need" more money.
I'm the type, where if I close that deal on a Monday. I'm going to be back out looking for another big deal like that ten minutes after they drive off. I don't close a big deal, and then relax. I keep pushing, and pushing.

General motors, and we have a Hyundai dealership too. Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Buick, and Hyundai.

Have you taken Jordan Belfort's Straight Line Persuasion system, if so, what are your thoughts?
Thotwrecker 6y ago
I have watched it all. It is great, but the material is not what is great. The way Jordan sells the course and the material is great.
It is similar to the "lambo in my garage" guy on youtube. Tai or whatever. His original video is a masterpiece of marketing. You can learn more about viral marketing and ad psychology from dissecting that video than by actually taking his course.
SLS is really good and I recommend it. Mind you I don't think a lot of it is stuff you want to directly apply to red pill / pick up / women, but I think it's super useful, especially for guys who struggle to take charge and take the lead in conversations.
Camp_KillYourself 6y ago
Thanks for the reply. So to clarify, you think it's useful just for entertainment / body language viewing purposes but that the actual content is not useful or has little practical application for sales?
subthrowaway321 6y ago
Nope. More of a Grant Cardone kind of guy myself. You have a link?

If you could give your thoughts on whether this seems like a good route to start, that'd be really helpful. I have been mostly a developer and while it pays well, I have never had much experience in sales.

You really think that when you get well over six figures in income. That the only income you'll have coming in is from your paycheck? Once you start making that much, you can start investing much more, buy and rent out property, I even buy and flip the occasional car. Which, without having the income I do, wouldn't really be possible.
I could quit tomorrow and live off my investments as long as I live modestly.

Great post. The only problem is that very few people make good salesmen. I have a business degree, I have a top 1% IQ, I am an award winning pubic speaker. . .and I absolutely suck at sales.
Ok, not completely. I worked in a call centre foisting caller ID boxes on people (this was a few years ago). My numbers were above average but the top guys had a je ne sais quoi that I could not replicate or emulate.
My thing is product design: creating something that "sells itself". When I went all entrepreneurial, that was my role. Partner 2 was a risk adverse accountant and partner 3 was the consumate salesman. We worked well as a team.
The fallout of that venture and our life paths is interesting in itself.
scissor_me_timbers00 6y ago
I don’t know why the downvotes, this is very accurate. I’ve been in sales before and the high performers definitely had an innate knack that was almost impossible to emulate.
halfback910 6y ago
I agree with you. I sit on the other side of the table. I deal with salesmen quite a lot. Contracts negotiation is now about 60% of my job. I'm a very good negotiator, but I doubt I'd apply those skills particularly well in the reverse.
I'm good at negotiating because we already need the product/service. The rest is a matter of research, getting as many options as possible, and sniffing out any inconsistencies or bullshit. Convincing someone to buy something they don't already think they need seems like it would be a fucking nightmare to me.
FreyWill 6y ago
What were you trying to sell? Sounds like you regret it?
Entropy-7 6y ago
In the past, I was working for Bell Canada doing "service calls" but the real thing was to place call display boxes. I guess I date myself, but at the time call display was a novelty.
As an entrepreneur, I designed a board game and two friends and I produced it. We sold it on 4 continents and maybe to the tune of a million over a few years.
I certainly don't regret that. It was a few of the most awesome years of my life. I want to get back into the game. . . of games because it is a shit load of fun if you can make some money at it.
subthrowaway321 6y ago
Interesting. I have a degree in biology, probably top 15% IQ, hate public speaking.
Believing in the product you sell is very, very important. If you aren't sold on it, you won't sell many people. You won't have enthusiasm like someone who thinks their product is the greatest thing ever. I'm lucky in that regard, as I think GM is making some good vehicles for the price right now. So, when I'm doing a pitch for someone, my enthusiasm is going to come through and hopefully rub off on them.
I shouldn't say there aren't any tricks. There are, it's just that anyone can learn them and they aren't some huge secret. One thing I had to work on, was making sure the questions I ask weren't yes or no type. If I see someone walking the lot. I'll approach them and ask, how can I help you? Not, do you need help? People are conditioned to respond in certain ways. They will without fail, tell you they are just looking if you ask them the wrong way. Then, you have an uphill battle already starting from the meet and greet and you haven't even talked numbers yet. Most people will stop after getting the, I'm just looking, response. They don't know where to go after that response. I say, awesome! What are we looking for? A car, truck, SUV, or van? Body language and confidence are big too. If you are hunched over and can't look the client in the eye, they will think you're hiding something, and be uncomfortable. If you can't take no for an answer and it ruins your entire day, you're fucked too. I assume four people will say no before one says yes. If I can get you to test drive the vehicle, and then get you to my desk, even if you didn't think you wanted a new car. I have about a 25%+ chance of getting you to sign anyways. I can't count the times someone walks out of finance and says, we weren't even expecting to buy a car today! I just laugh a little to myself.
Entropy-7 6y ago
I believe in the products I design myself. Other products, not so much.
From training and personal experience, you are absolutely correct: never ask a yes/no question. Make it open-ended and engage them.

I’m going into pharma sales as a medical rep. and my customers are physicians.
Any advices on it?
subthrowaway321 6y ago
Probably going to be a lot of big egos. Learn how to work with that kind of person. You basically massage the all hell out of their ego, make them feel like the big boss man. And it will be a piece of cake. Learn how to let them be in control, and make sure you are steering them, so to speak, in the direction you want.

whoismikejoneswho 6y ago
Eh. I hear what OP is saying but I am not sure its always so binary simply because you are working for someone. Truth is, unless you're filthy rich by birth, everyone has a boss. Whether its a client, a manager, shareholders - you will always be beholden to working to meet their standards and trying to please them. Sure, you can go be the 'boss' and own a business with employees and feel like a "real man" but you still bow down to customers and banks to finance your shit and work 80 hours a week. Or, if you're skilled, you can skip all that mess and earn quadruple being a wimpy employee for Microsoft or Goldman Sachs. At the end of the day its all about who pays you more money, more reliably. You will concede your pride and a bit of your caveman self to get it either way.
halfback910 6y ago
Some guy and I arrived at the same conclusion in another thread here a couple days ago. I think you're right.
the99percent1 6y ago
Somebody is your boss.
Until you have "fuck you" money.
You dont have to be super rich to get there. But you do need to practice financial restraint, get a high paying job, invest long term and be a stingy motherfucker.

This is part of what appealed to me about a professional poker player. Was a fun two years but that shit consumes you.
I don't agree with your point. If you own a restaurant, how much will you bow down to customers? Will you be any customer's bitch the same way you would be to your boss?
You can't compare owning your own business to working as an employee at a corporation where your boss can dictate how many hours you need to work, whether you get promoted or not, and can fire you.
enteralterego 6y ago
more than you think. 3 recent terrible yelp reviews will screw up your business for a while.

I am software engineer with 10 years of experience. Currently in my job I am looking only for two things:
Good money
First point is obvious, second needs some clarification. In all my jobs there was always some slack time - most people spend it watching cats on internet or other useless activities. I am using this time to develop skills not necessary associated with current job - e.g. learning functional language or doing coursera courses (some of them are really good even for advanced programmers). So I am always looking for job where slack time is maximized. Because of this I learned a lot and tasks that requires more time by other people I can do really fast. Which also maximizes my slack time.
cubicpolynomial3 6y ago
What are some good Coursera courses you would recommend even for advanced programmers?
conflagratorX 6y ago
There are 3 good courses on Discrete Optimization. Especially this one: https://www.coursera.org/learn/discrete-optimization . One the hardest and most satisfying course I have ever done.
Also depends what your interests are. There are good courses on cryptography, algorithms, electronics (analog and digital), Machine Learning, Graphics. Target courses from top universities like Stanford, Yale, MIT, etc.
enteralterego 6y ago
I am one of those wimpy employees, and have several other income streams (musician, freelancing etc) and I can confirm that. There's always a boss. Unless you have/make so much money that you can live off interest comfortably.
As long as you don't look for the life satisfaction at work, then in my book you're fine.
Work is just work. It will pay the bills, let you have good healthcare, let you have some vacation time/travel, let you build a retirement/investment fund.
As long as you are above misery, you're pretty much good to spend your time with what you love and who you love. Not everyone needs an empire, a lambo and hot romanian women hanging around. Sure it would be nice, but it will wear off in time like everything else.
FreyWill 6y ago
Man that is so defeatist. In my country, there is free healthcare so you don’t have to worry about getting that from a job. There’s also lots of opportunity and growth. There’s so much that if you aren’t actively going for it then you’re being left behind. You can’t just be idling: if you aren’t going for it, someone else is.
enteralterego 6y ago
This depends on your definition on defeat. Money is a means to an end. In my country there is free healthcare but its not comparable with paid healthcare. Let me put it like this - people from European countries (and rich Arab-Gulf countries) travel to where I live to get operations done sooner and cheaper and in most cases better.
I like working in a structured environment where most things are within rules and policies. I do what is asked, which is not that difficult for me personally, I take my pay, and go enjoy life.
Mind you I'm a senior individual contributor with a lot of flexibility on how (and even when) I do my work - (not a people manager) and make quite a nice salary so I feel I have a good deal as is.
If your work is not hell, working in a good company has many perks.
Would I not want a passive income that will basically be a money tree? Sure who wouldnt.. But I'd rather spend my time the enjoying time with my son, who is growing up and will leave the nest in a few years. These times don't come back. You cant really buy memories where you're teaching your kid how to play an ACDC song on his first guitar.
By my own terms, I'm pretty much a winner.
the99percent1 6y ago
Who pays for free healthcare? Somebody always pays.

C'mon man, you know a big reason for that is because people are so damn shitty when it comes to finances. You don't have to live like a monk, but people are just bad when it comes to finances.
I was a personal banker and I've seen people that had really good salaries kill their paychecks on dumb shit. Biggest one is close to $300 a week at bars, clubs, eating out, brunches, hair appointments, ect.... every week.
That shit can be cut down easily. There is no reason to be spending close to $300 (and I'm being very generous here) on every Friday and Saturday.
Don't even get me started on new cars, car insurance and expensive vacations every three months.
enteralterego 6y ago
Well, I'm not 60 days from homelessness. I have a emergency fund that will allow me to live without working for about 2 years if I stretch it.
Sure if you lose a job it sucks, but with my track record, the only thing I'm worried is sickness that will prevent me from working - not unemployment. I have several marketable skills.
Its not like I dont get the idea, it is great for sure. Its only that I'm pretty good at the corporate game.
the99percent1 6y ago
So you are telling me that those selling second hand shirts in a flea market are doing better financially than a high flying corporate lawyer?
Get the fuck outta here with your entrepreneurship BS..
It isnt better. Get a high paying job. Save 70% of that. Invest all of it and make those investments bring in enough passive income to support your lifestyle until you fork out zero dollars.
Then retire and do whatever you want.
That is the true path to financial freedom. Not slogging off entrepreneurship as the only alternative. There are far better routes to accomplish the same outcome.
I_STOMP_YOU 6y ago
You could die well before you hit some arbitrary financial freedom number or be hit with x number setbacks. If you love the grind of being the lawyer then do it, if you love the grind of hustling t shirts then do that. Life is way too short to be doing something you hate everyday thinking you may be happy in your 50s and 60s
sky_fallen 6y ago
I tend to agree that people spend way too much on stuff that they don't need, for instance, all my diet gym and supplements amount to about 200/mo which I think is the priority 1, and even though I have almost nothing for anything else (saving super hard on my 18000/yr job). But I get insane health benefits by doing that compared to spending 5 bucks a day on useless junk food.
I have never been impressed by anyone I met who said 'I can't afford this blah blah' unless they have children. It's always xbox this or clubbing that. The entitlement.
[deleted] 6y ago
Most "high flying corporate lawyers" are not employees; they are entrepreneurs. They don't work for the firm; they own the firm.

Yeah, I worked twice as hard for a year with two business partners in an industry that I previously made $150k a year in and ended up selling the shares in the company for $15k.
A previous company I founded made me $40k a month.
A new project I'm on nets me $20k up front and a $3-5k monthly residual plus a $2k bonus for every extra franchise opened and an additional $2.2k residual for each franchise with 6 franchises due to be opened in the next 8 months (I'm developing some key tech systems for them, not investing).
Another project will net me $4k a month and is 100% automated but took 6 months to build full time.
There are no rules when it comes to business and boy sometimes taking that guaranteed 150k for clocking in the 9-5 looks great.
Then again stacking multiple low investment businesses with a couple of residual passive income streams is what my current goal is.
Point is - every business is different and some of them can be automated, others will make you a shit load of cash but suck up all tour time, others have a potential to make a shit load of cash but require you to work three times as hard... And even then it may end up being for nothing.
[deleted] 6y ago
[deleted]
midgetpooooo 6y ago
Don't know how to do that without expendable money first from a job that requires experience that you have little to none of since they look for candidates with experience, and so on.
[deleted] 6y ago
Wow man, I am really interested in hearing more of your story
majaka1234 6y ago
Thanks dude.
It's really not as inspiring as it sounds.
More like a crazy yo yo back and forth. Most of my money got rolled into a new project of one or the other and there were times where I learnt the hard way to not rely on a single source of income when that beautiful $40k a month company burnt and crashed miserably over a three month period when the US dollar shot up against my local currency.
Biggest lessons:
diversify your businesses
Digital businesses where you don't hold stock are way better in terms of scale and overhead.
I don't have a lot of money in the bank - in fact I'm probably three clients not paying on time from having to ask my parents to let me crash on their sofa or passing my resume around for at least the next six months until these new contracts mature because when you're freelancing and building a business basically every dollar gets rolled back into expanding your business.
On the plus side one of the guys I used to work for started his company three years ago and took it for $300k revenue in his first year by cold call hustling himself to 5 employees and 1 million revenue in year 2 to 50 employees and 13 million projected revenue by the end of this year by doing exactly this.
With that all being said - I have no kids, no long term relationships and no major responsibilities and have an unhealthy obsession with long term gratification so I don't really care about possessions or short term so I'm fine as long as I've got my bills covered.
If youre not optimising your living expenses or you have kids to support or otherwise then go for stability before you even think of doing something nuts like what I've done because it's ridiculously high risk.
midgetpooooo 6y ago
I don't know how to do all that on my own.
majaka1234 6y ago
Go and find a job where you can learn how to do that.

I have a motto : "Always have two jobs; one to pay the bills and one to get rich off of."
The plain fact is that most guys can't start their own business and be their own man, but you can have something on the side that can pan out.
A buddy of mine is a soccer coach at a public high school. He imports high-end shoes and sports accessories and sells them on the internet. His business now nets him more than his teacher's salary.
I have to get back in the game. I used to be a lawyer but it was so soul destroying that I went into teaching. However, I used to be a game designer and I have one title that brings me a trickle of royalties. I don't fancy myself as a Steve Jackson but if I can get another dozen titles out there, then I will have enough passive income to live off of.
kiwiMAGA 6y ago
That's a good one.
I have my full time job, it's alright, I'm taking on more responsibilities and expect pay rises. But I'm also saving 30% of my income to create my side business (hedge fund).
Expectations1 6y ago
Most jobs exist because a business owner cant be bothered to do them, know this, and you can start finding your passion.
Entropy-7 6y ago
Or at least, because it doesn't make economic sense or the business has expanded to the point where the owner doesn't have the time to do everything.
OTOH, a lot of jobs exist because they require a special skill set. I'm not graphic artist; I can't draw for shit. I hired artists to do all the drawings and illustrations.

In one respect, I guess I was a shitty lawyer. In another way, I saved my clients thousands of dollars because I talked things out rather than marching their ass into world war whatever.
I recall meeting a top divorce attorney for negotiations. My boss asked me what she looked like. I told him she was built like cheap barrel of rum.
I asked around and there was a consensus: she is a complete cunt and her clients love her. She represented bitter ex wives who wanted to create as much confusion as possible and inflict as much pain as they could on the man they swore to love.
