You know... maybe this reveals what kind of a person I am... not long ago, the wife and I drove out to the countryside to say hello to my wife's relatives. She's from a large extended family, with farms scattered all around this little town.
And these are traditional wooden houses, with the structures being built before electricity being installed years later. With bare wires and sockets having been installed in the 1930s.
My father in law's brother was a former fireman. He's as tall as I am, but he's built like a rugby player. He's wide. And he farms. Whenever my wife and I go to his house, he has always treated me specially.
My wife and I brought sashimi and beer and stronger booze, but we had a good laugh because he'd gone fishing the day before and specially carved up some sashimi for us earlier. So we sit, have some fresh-cut fish and vegetables and give him some holiday gifts. When you put his eggplant and cucumbers in your teeth, there's a crisp satisfying snap to them. I ask about his farming, and he later takes us on a little tour behind the house. It's a farm which has been in my wife's family for generations-- there are Tokugawa-era documents delineating the land that they have. We get a heavy box of vegetables, fish and sake as a going-away gift.
We only have good news to report, despite everything going on everywhere else. The honesty, simplicity and earthy-feeling permanency of the man's life is rather invigorating to me.
No matter what happens, it feels as if my wife and I can always have a group of self-supporting people out there who can offer some goodwill, to whom we can periodically return.
There's not a lot of certainty in the world, but stuff like that is rather a special reservoir.
