title says it all.
edit: posted this here and on TRP
edit2: thanks all. There seem to be several theories and none of them are mutually exclusive. To sum them up:
- music affects women's emotions directly in a way that is panty wetting
- pre-selection
- musical talent implies skill witch in turn implies fitness.

As an artist, and one who has hung out with many artists (including musicians), I think I know.
It's the same reason "nerd girls" are so enticing. Men think, here's a girl just like me.
Women are much more artistic/sensitive as compared to men. In the world of the arts, you'd be amazed at how many women there are.
Not all women have this temperament, but even fewer men have it. There are very very few female musicians because music is autistic and mathematical, but take the visual arts, verbal arts (like journalism/writing), and you'll find scores of women.
Another thing about musicians is that they can easily give the impression of alphaness and high status by performing. Younger women are easily fooled by those displays.
TL;DR: People are attracted to people similar to themselves. More women are "artistic/sensitive" than men.

Women basically just want the prize. They never want the Average Joe. They want someone who sticks out from the crowd and who is somehow different.

The book, Mating Mind: How Sexual Choice Shaped the Evolution, suggests a sort of feedback loop: Between two men of equal physical fitness/looks, one of them can gain an advantage through intelligence- either by gaining more resources via intelligence, or by displaying higher intelligence which signals the likelihood of being able to access more resources.
This advantage turned into a preference for intelligence.
One would argue that displaying prowess in the arts is peacocking of the brain. The book suggests that this competition was inevitable, and lead to the development of human intelligence.

The creation of art, in all its forms, is about passionate expression - without apology. Men who create genuine art are and have always been high status men, whether or not they're broke. Creating art can be a very alpha activity and it hits women in their emotional centers.
As women get older, and their brains start to work, the importance of resources starts to weigh in. Suddenly the broke artist doesn't look so attractive - in a relationship. They'll still fuck them because, to be honest, they can't help it. Women can't think their way past thousands of years of evolved behavior any more than men.
For men, the equivalent is the hot 20 year old. Why is she hot? Because she's also the most fertile and capable of bearing children at that age. It's biology that makes those perky breasts, perfect skin, and tight ass so attractive. Good luck trying to think your way past being attracted to that (and why bother when it's so enjoyable).

I like this explanation a lot better than "artists are masters of emotional manipulation". I don't think that last one stands up to how genuine artists pour everything they have into what they do and what they express.

I'll take a stab,
It's a natural attraction sweet spot, an easy to understand representation of the level of mental ability that shows natural ability, dedication and importantly, the controlled expression of a truth/vulnerability the artist has experienced in a way that resonates well with people.
Art aims to invoke emotions and thought in others and that is an ambitious act which is a measure of status.
