An opportunity came up randomly and I'll be working from Rio for a bit , living with another gringo in a house on the beach.
I searched the previous forum posts and was able to ascertain that if she's a fan of carnivale one had better double up the condoms.
Any other tips / things to watch out for that are specific to South America, Brazil or Rio?

I'm Brazilian. Never went to Rio (never intend to either), but I've spoken to a lot of Rio natives in my lifetime. Here's the general tips they give you for Rio:
Be extremely vigilant in the streets. Never ever take your cellphone out in the sidewalk, especially at night. Rio natives go into a store if they need to use their cellphone while on the streets. Do not wear chains, watches, or any exposed jewelry; those will be stolen. Ideally keep your time on the streets to a minimum, just into the Uber and out. Avoid taking the bus, these get robbed all the time.
Always be vigilant, be suspicious of everyone and everything. Act like you're in a warzone and you'll be just fine. Importantly, if you are surprised by robbers, don't even think about resisting, just give them your stuff.
Have fun!

Why Spanish?

Spanish is commonly spoken. Portuguese would be better, but most people understand Spanish.

I had to create an account here just to answer you: What the fuck? We don't speak Spanish in Brasil. If you try to speak Spanish here, you'll get frowned upon. You're better off speaking english than spanish around here, you BET. Most people will even know more english than spanish.
tl;dr to OP: do NOT speak fucking spanish.

It's like you totally missed the part where I replied with "Portuguese would be better".
I'm glad you took the time to make an account here, because it gives me the opportunity to tell you to fuck off.
