Told my doctor I was feeling low energy and low motivation and wasn't waking up with morning wood so he said I could get my testosterone checked along with the standard blood work. All the results came back healthy and total testosterone was 500. Should I be concerned? I thought it would be higher since I'm still pretty young (22) and lifting heavy fairly consistently.

Honestly your cure imo lies in the gym. If your levels were like 200-400 I’d be a bit more concerned. At 500 your issue is you aren’t pushing yourself enough in the gym.
Don’t skip leg day and lift to FAILURE. Don’t lift the same weights in 10-12 rep range; always increase. When it gets to heavy bust out a rep or two or however many you can at the higher weight and finish the set at a lower weight.
No pain no gain; it’s this repeated lifting to the point of failure that causes you to grow and stimulates your body to produce more testosterone.
Aside from that eat clean, avoid plastic shit, etc.
Steak, eggs, seafood (shrimp/salmon wildcaught), organic fruits/veggies (unless they’re in the clean 15), consistent sleep schedj. Maybe add in some ashwaganda, boron, zinc, tongkat Ali, horny goat weed as well to supplement regime.
Best of luck.

Yeah im already pushing myself in the gym pretty hard man, I go to failure and do dropsets like you mentioned. I am lacking on the diet side though so thanks for the tips, I'll definitely try incorporating more of those foods/supplements.

I'm almost 60. I don't take anything, yet.
Mine is 710
you are young, shouldn't go on it yet.
Like Firstlight said, Free T, is probably more accurate.
So, lots of things can affect what you are experiencing.
Stress? High Cardio workouts? Lack of sleep? poor diet? Are you taking any meds?
Are probably the most common.
First-light 2mo ago
Its a lower number for a man your age but well within the healthy range -provided other things check out OK. Male hormones are a balancing act.
What's your free T? If that's low then I would definitely look further but if its pretty normal, I would only be wary of TRT at your age.
joyboy 2mo ago
Not sure about free T he only ordered the Total T.
First-light 2mo ago
I would get a wider test of hormones to include things like free T (for which I think you need SHBG and Albumin results). If it bugs you, its worth a test rather than thinking on it for months or years. It shouldn't cos that much to buy yourself a test kit, take it to a phlebotomist and then post the sample to a lab and then you will know.
whytehorse2021 2mo ago
I'm on TRT and my level is 400. It really depends on your SHBG. If it's low then you run hot at 400, if it's high then you run hot at 800.
First-light 2mo ago
Yeah it really is unique to the individual. I am in my 50's contemplating TRT. Don't want to go enhanced but high SHBG has locked my hormones up. All those times I avoided soyboy foods, I never would have imagined I would one day be worried about having very low Oestradiol but my Oestradiol is worryingly low and I have lost an inch and half of height!! Free T is also poor (a touch under 6). However, my total T is 500. Total T alone does not tell you enough.
whytehorse2021 2mo ago
I don't remember the treatment for high SHBG but it's out there over on reddit r/testosterone. I think they all take Boron and have good results. Keep in mind industrial food lacks essential nutrients.
Boron is a trace element that can be found in various foods and in the environment. Here are some natural sources where you can find boron:
When aiming to increase your boron intake through diet, it's important to eat a varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. Keep in mind that while boron is beneficial, like all minerals, it should be consumed in moderation. Excessive intake of boron can lead to toxicity, so supplements should only be taken under medical advice. Also, the boron content in food can be influenced by the soil in which the food is grown, so there can be variation in the boron levels even within the same type of food.
First-light 2mo ago
Thank you for that. I may try Boron. I was debating it. I don't really understand SHGB enough. Is it doing a necessary job? Not having enough shortens your life but I do have rather a lot. I am going through the process of get medical advice on my hormones at the moment. It looks like they are pointing me to TRT. Once I actually get a prescription, I think I won't use it until I have had a last try with diet and then given myself another blood test. I have given diet a fair go over the years and have good habits but I have not tried Boron supplementation itself.
whytehorse2021 2mo ago
SHBG is like a gas tank but instead of gas it holds testosterone. Some people have a large tank and some have a small tank. So long as your free T is 1-2% you're good. Total T is kinda misleading.
Musicgoon78 2 2mo ago
Don't let the docs tell you some bullshit. You will feel good in that 700 to 800 range. 500 is about the middle but not great. Eat oysters and broccoli. Oyster will make you horny AF. If your doctor is being a bitch, see a urologist for a second opinion.
I would try to bump up those numbers a bit.

Post the whole lab results.Sometimes it can be a thyroid malfunction.
Your T levels are on the lower end, but it the free T that's more important. If your SHBG is high, that's your clue. Add Zinc/vitamin D and sleep more.
joyboy 2mo ago
I don't have the results for free T or SHBG. I think the thyroid is fine since Free T3 and T4 are 3.35 and .82 which it says is in the normal range.
Maybe my Vitamin D is low, this is what i got for that:
Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy, Total Normal value: 30.0 - 100.0 ng/mL Value 30.5
Intrepid_Place53900 1 2mo ago
vitamin D is very important, for multiple things. Most people in US have low Vit D , with lack of sunlight exposure.
Take good D3 , may also want a good mutli-vitamin.
also brings up healthy diet questions. https://www.verywellhealth.com/foods-rich-in-vitamin-d-8348470

Check your HGH levels, although this is hard to do as the HGH half life is so short, so they look for other markers (ie the impact HGH has on other hormone levels).
