Howdy.
You are reading this because you asked for book recommendations, or because you clicked on this post because you know how to operate an online forum's search bar and possess at least two braincells which are still capable of digesting literary texts larger than a medium sized social media post or TwitLonger, ideally without automatically saying the words out loud. (Fun fact, until around the 8th century, 'silent reading' was not common due to the social nature of reading text, incredibly low literacy rates and the aristocratic gatekeeping of the written word, there are records of people in ancient rome being absolutely shaken to their core witnessing someone read a book or text without saying the text out loud.)
Preamble on effective utilisation of self help books and Seduction manuals as a tool in your life READ THIS FIRST
There's a lot of books here, 40 to be exact.
I made this list myself to give myself a modest library of books ranging from Social Science and Psychology to straight up Pickup Artist Guides and Seduction Manuals. Aside from the 'Non-negotiable' books, everything else here is optional if you plan on reading about TRP, PUA, Self Improvement and Discipline.
I cannot stress how optional they truly are. Why? Well, if you read the non-negotiable books, that should provide you with all of the starting tools, mindset adjustments and personal revelations you should require to get out and into the field and start doing it, both figuratively and literally.
If you still feel anxious or scared about putting these concepts into practice or you have questions or lack understanding, read them again. There is a small but critical difference between reading a book and having your internal monologue (or external, if you're a roman orator) make noises, and your brain actually contemplating, accepting and learning the information contained within the words. Many people do the former, very few do the latter, especially on the first read-through. If you're pounding through these books relatively quickly, you aren't letting the words and the ideas resonate in your head for long enough. Take your time.
There is also an inherent issue with these kinds of books which are at odds with their messaging and intended consequences, that being that reading and saying can feel very similar to acting and doing. A lot of people who engage in Self-Help or Self-Improvement content encounter a pitfall wherein the more they read about these concepts, the less likely they are to actually get out there and do them. Their engagement with these concepts acts more like voyeurism in the way that by reading it, they believe that they are 'doing' it by understanding these ideas, when in reality very little in their real life actually changes or they actually become less inclined to apply these concepts practically due to a feeling of satisfaction they derive from engaging with it, almost like looking at porn instead of having real sex.
So, what I'd recommend you do (and what I feel like a lot of people on here would recommend you do) is read the non-negotiables, understand them and fully absorb them like the foundational guidebooks they truly are, apply their teachings and personally contemplate what you want to achieve, how you're going to achieve those things and the ancillary and secondary actions which are required to achieve said things.
Once you've done this, Go and fucking do them. Make mistakes. Fail. Get rejected. Get yourself into uncomfortable situations, make those changes and start living the ideas and concepts which have been presented to you. None of these 35 books will help you in any way, shape or form unless you actually go out there and do the thing, it's kind of in the name, SELF-Help, SELF-Improvement, you gotta do it. Theoretical knowledge in this case is useless without practical experience.
There is a reason why the old RSD and PUA forums used to require that any new theories posted required a section on the real life experience or practical application of this concept before you could post it. You NEEDED to include a Field Report otherwise you were disregarded and your post was deleted. This is because without practical experience, theoretical knowledge is absolutely useless.
Now, onto the list.
Non-Negotiable books/required reading
These books are the most commonly reccommended and highly rated books on RP concepts, these are the ones you as a newbie or junior scholar should read. Consider these books the curriculum for 'RedPill 101'.
Models by Mark Manson
Blurb: "Models is a book on becoming an attractive man based not on tricks, tactics, games or techniques, but on self-development. Its truths are backed by decades of psychological research. Its focus is on the emotional process of seduction rather than agonizing over logical steps. Its goal is to create powerful connections with women instead of trying to impress them. It's the most mature and honest guide on how a man can attract women without faking behavior, without lying and without emulating others. Stop acting like an attractive man and become an attractive man."
Models is honestly the best and most comprehensive dating guidebook ever written. If there is ONE book you are going to read, make it this one. Sit through it. Stomach it. Read it again if you don't understand something, if I could only hand one book to every able bodied man who is struggling with dating and life in general and FORCE them to read it, it would be this one, and frankly I think it would make the world, at least from the perspective of dating, love, relationships and women, a better place.
No More MR Nice Guy - Dr Robert A Glover
Blurb: "Originally published as an e-book that became a controversial media phenomenon, No More Mr. Nice Guy! landed its author, a certified marriage and family therapist, on The O'Reilly Factor and the Rush Limbaugh radio show. Dr. Robert Glover has dubbed the "Nice Guy Syndrome" trying too hard to please others while neglecting one's own needs, thus causing unhappiness and resentfulness. It's no wonder that unfulfilled Nice Guys lash out in frustration at their loved ones, claims Dr. Glover. He explains how they can stop seeking approval and start getting what they want in life, by presenting the information and tools to help them ensure their needs are met, to express their emotions, to have a satisfying sex life, to embrace their masculinity and form meaningful relationships with other men, and to live up to their creative potential."
This is the unplugging book. If Models is the book I would hand to someone to every man, this would be the book I would hand to the men who feel bitter and angry or reject the ideas presented in Models. This is a very confronting book, it is not politically correct, and frankly some of the ideas and concepts are questionable, but if you struggle with the notion of 'nice guys finish last' or are failing to accept that being a skinnyfat doormat won't get you laid, read this.
The Book Of Pook - So Suave/unknown
Pook is a Book! This book is a collection of posts made by a prominent member of the PUA forum So Suave. The 'book' is free to download if you search for it, and there is also a link to the rest of the catalogue of posts in the form of The Pook Manifesto which is a continuation of TBOP, Pook and Anti-Dump’s Machine, a collection of posts related to long term relationships, The Lost Files of Pook which is the remainder of the posts which didn't make it into the other books, and The DJ Bible, a collection of Field Reports which accompanied the posts. The Book of Pook is required reading, the others aren't. think of it like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (my favourite book) by Douglas Adams. Hitchhiker's Guide is a self contained novel in isolation, but the Hitchhiker's tetralogy add onto the universe and story of the first, if you read any of the other ones without reading Hitchhiker's Guide, they wouldn't make sense, but if you only read Hitchhiker's Guide, it would make sense on it's own. Get it?
If Models is the straight laced, clean cut Ying, then The Book of Pook is its cheeky, smarmy, dirty, naughty Yang. it's written more like you would expect a PUA book to be written, and honestly the tonality and the characterisation makes it an incredibly fun and enjoyable read.
If I had to sum these books up, it would be 'Ooh La-La!' Don't get it? Read the book/s.
Other books (and why you should still read them)
These books expand on these concepts. Now, there are a lot of ways to skin a cat, and a lot of these books skin the same cat in very similar ways. Still, they have their own values and perspectives which can help you on this journey, and assuming you're going out there and applying this knowledge practically, reading these books will help you keep your mind straight and focussed on your goals and the actions you must perform to achieve them.
There are also books in here which delve into specific ideas and phenomena and elaborate on concepts which are discussed very basically in the prior books, read the descriptions and blurbs to find out what they're about and pick them up if they seem interesting to you or go into questions or issues you have that you want further information on.
I'll also be chucking in general self help books, practical psychology books and motivational books. I think they can all be useful, but again, theoretical knowledge is useless without practical experience.
A lot of these authors also have other books where they expand on these concepts or go into other areas, if you find yourself liking one author and they, say, have a book on another topic, go read it.
For the regulars
I also implore others on here to suggest books if they aren't listed, but please do the following:
- List the name of the book and the name of the author/s
- Categorise the book using the categories I use (ADD CATEGORIES HERE)
- Include a blurb or description of the book, this can either be from the back or from a website like amazon
- (optional but highly preferred) include a personal comment on why you think this book is useful and why you think others should read it.
This is also very much a work-in-progress. If you think a certain book shouldn't be in a certain category, tell me to move it and why.
None of these categories are in any sort of order, but I've put the 'best' one at the top spot because that's the one people are most likely to read. If you think a book you or I have listed deserves that top or second place spot, tell me and tell me why.

General Self-Help/Self-Motivational books
These books aren't really about dating or seduction, they're to help people in tough spots and who lack the core, basic elements of structure and discipline in their lives. I'd honestly say these should go above the 'Non-Negotiables' as a 'Step 0' but I know that a lot of people aren't struggling with these concepts. Still, even if you aren't I think it's absolutely worth a read, Especially 12 Rules for Life, if you can separate the man from the message (and his whore Daughter Mikhaila who rode his coattails and is such an ironically beautiful example of what is wrong with modern 'manosphere' dating advice and women who talk about it).
12 Rules for Life - Jordan Petersen
Humorous, surprising and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.
What does the nervous system of the lowly lobster have to tell us about standing up straight (with our shoulders back) and about success in life? Why did ancient Egyptians worship the capacity to pay careful attention as the highest of gods? What dreadful paths do people tread when they become resentful, arrogant and vengeful?
Power of Habit - Charles Duhigg
In The Power of Habit, award-winning business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. Distilling vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives that take us from the boardrooms of Procter & Gamble to the sidelines of the NFL to the front lines of the civil rights movement, Duhigg presents a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential. At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, being more productive, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. As Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.
Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck - Mark Manson
In this generation-defining self-help guide, a superstar blogger cuts through the crap to show us how to stop trying to be "positive" all the time so that we can truly become better, happier people.
For decades, we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "Fk positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is fked and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is--a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mindset that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen R. Covey
In The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, author Stephen R. Covey presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey reveals a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, service, and human dignity--principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.
Skinned Cats
This is a category of very similar books written about the same subjects of the main three. I include them because they still have value, but their value is more along the lines of 'going over the same ideas from different perspectives' with the potential for some new or slightly differently presented information than they are about adding anything new or dramatically groundbreaking. Read them if you'd like, but as the category title's idiom says, there are many ways to skin a cat, and these books skin the same (or similar) cats in remarkably similar ways.
The Rational Male - Rollo Tomassi
"The Bible of the Red Pill", The Rational Male® is a rational and pragmatic approach to intersexual dynamics, and the social and psychological underpinnings of intergender relations. The book is the compiled, ten-year core writing of author/blogger Rollo Tomassi from therationalmale.com.
Rollo Tomassi is one of the leading voices in the globally growing, male-focused online consortium known as the "Manosphere".
Outlined are the concepts of positive masculinity, the feminine imperative, plate theory, operative social conventions and the core psychological theory behind Game awareness and "red pill" ideology. Tomassi explains and outlines the principles of intergender social dynamics and foundational reasoning behind them.
*I know this is the "Red Pill Bible", but honestly I think Models is a better book in both intent and content. I dare not call it derivative, but a lot of the same concepts discussed here are discussed in Models, and I feel like they're done better in that book than here.
Practical Female Psychology: For the Practical man - Joseph W. Smith & David Clare Franco
Are you tired of feeling clueless when it comes to dating, sex, and relationships? Look no further than Practical Female Psychology for the Practical Man, now in its 14th year of publication. Written by experienced authors Franco, David Clare, and myself, this book provides valuable insights for men who want to maintain a passionate, long-term relationship with a woman of their choosing.
In a world where dating, sex, and relationships can be complex and difficult to manage, this book offers practical advice on how to overcome shyness, interact comfortably with the opposite sex, and find sexual partners. We share our personal experiences of meeting and having sex with a lot of women, despite not being super rich, tall, or with model-good looks.*
Atomic Attraction - Christopher Canwell
Attraction doesn’t grow in a warm, safe environment, it grows in a swamp of discomfort and anxiety. This is just one of many truths you’re about to discover.
In Atomic Attraction Christopher Canwell takes us on a journey through the dark waters of attraction. What turns women on? What makes them choose one man over another? And how can you become truly desirable and attractive?
This book answers these questions by combining the latest scientific research with real-life case studies to show you, the reader, how to ignite the fires of attraction and captivate those around you.
The Manual: What Women Want and How to Give It to Them - W. Anton
The Manual is the ultimate and only guide to getting girls and to understand women once and for all. This is why guys that read it don't read or recommend anything else. Because the few men who "get it" spend the rest of their lives enjoying sexy girls in abundance - and so can you.
You can learn to get ANY girl you want, the same way that all men who are naturally good with women have. The only difference is that you may learn it much FASTER, instead of wasting tons of time and money on fruitless dates or a new car/haircut/shirt that you BELIEVE will make you more attractive - but really doesn't.
Further Reading
Some of these books are 'skinned cats' but they contain enough distinctive information or delve deeper into certain topics that they warrant distinction. The rest of them cover certain topics in more detail, but also contain 'skinned cat' concepts.
Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life - Emily Nagoski
Researchers have spent the last decade trying to develop a "pink pill" for women to function like Viagra does for men. So where is it? Well, for reasons this book makes crystal clear, that pill will never be the answer--but as a result of the research that's gone into it, scientists in the last few years have learned more about how women's sexuality works than we ever thought possible, and Come as You Are explains it all.
"This is a woman's sex book! Why is it in this list?" I've included it because, umm, if you're here, you probably want to be good at fucking and pleasing women sexually, right? Books like these can contain valuable information about how to effortlessly and easily sexually satisfy women, and as you (should) know, the better fuck you are, the more likely they are to come back for more.
What Women Want when they test men - Bruce Bryans
If you pay close enough attention to what really attracts women, you’ll find that what women want is a man with a backbone. Women want to be with a man who knows how to take the lead and make decisions; one who has strong personal boundaries and knows how to love her like…a man.
Unfortunately, a lot of men have difficulty accepting the truth that many women prefer to be with a man who isn’t afraid to stand up to them, who challenges them, and who refuses to be pushed around by women (or anything else for that matter). This is especially true of women who seek a more traditional male-female gender role dynamic in their romantic relationships.
Always Talk to Strangers - David Wygant

Whether they conducted their research in life or in the lab, experts Tucker Max and Dr. Geoffrey Miller have spent the last 20+ years learning what women really want from their men, why they want it, and how men can deliver those qualities.
The short answer: become the best version of yourself possible, then show it off. It sounds simple, but it's not. If it were, Tinder would just be the stuff you use to start a fire. Becoming your best self requires honesty, self-awareness, hard work and a little help.

Double Your Dating - David DeAngelo
"It's taken me a long time to figure out all of the things that you're about learn. I've spent years on this.
This book is meant to be used like an encyclopedia. It's meant to be a REFERENCE, not a novel.
The best way to use it is to read it and find all of the parts that you like and all of the ideas, skills and techniques that you would like to work on and improve. Then take those sections and either write them down or print them so you can review them and practice."
Unlock Her Legs: Unleash the Power of the Scrambler - Bobby Rio, Lynne Graham
Bobby Rio created Unlock Her Legs, aiming to show guys exactly how to get success with a specific girl that they already know. Most likely it'll be a girl that has placed you in the 'friend zone' and could include a co-worker, ex-girlfriend, classmate or any other girl that you happen to know.
PUA Handbooks/Seduction Guides
The books in this category differ in tone and content to the 'Skinned Cats' and 'Non-Negotiables' in their design. They are meant to be 'get laid quick schemes' and are built around practical concepts and approach/seduction guides. TRP kinda doesn't like these books because although they do work, they usually work through reliance on pretty dumb and gullible women and bake you into set frameworks and ways of operating, but they do have massive amounts of value if you're struggling with the nuts and bolts of the 'how' to actually attract, talk to and bed a woman.
Undercover Sex Signals - Neil Lowndes
More than 95% of guys don't pick up on a woman's sex signals. Here's how to make sure you're not one of them.
You're in a crowded bar, and the hottie across the room breaks eye contact to put on lipstick. Do you assume she's: a. Vain b. Rude c. Totally into you?
If you've answered with anything other than c, you're dead wrong.
Women are always giving off signals, and men are always missing them. In Undercover Sex Signals, bestselling author and communications expert Leil Lowndes shows how to score on every pass, with everything from the best activity for a first date to how a guy should dress to increase his odds for sealing the deal.
The Mystery Method - Mystery, Chris Odom
For every man who always wondered why some guys have all the luck, Mystery, considered by many to be the world's greatest pick-up artist, finally reveals his secrets for finding and forming relationships with some of the world's most beautiful women. Mystery gained mainstream public attention for his role in Neil Strauss New York Times bestselling expose, The Game. Now he has written the definitive handbook on the art of the pick-up.
He developed his unique method over years of observing social dynamics, and interacting with women in clubs, to learn how to overcome the guard that many women put up to deflect come-ons from "average frustrated chumps".
The Natural - Richard La Ruina
One of the world’s top pick-up artists, Richard La Ruina went from having no women to being a true master of seduction. Now he shows you how to do the same. So move over Mystery, and tell Neil Strauss that The Rules of the Game are about to be rewritten. Every element of the winning pickup is right here, from discovering confidence to exuding charm, learning conversation starters to mastering body language, to much more. And as you move from daydreaming to flirtation to passion to romance to love, The Natural will show you how it’s done.
Day Bang: How To Casually Pick Up Girls During The Day - Roosh V
Day Bang is a 201-page book that teaches you how to pick up women during the day, primarily in a coffee shop, clothing store, bookstore, grocery store, subway, or on the street. It contains 51 openers, 23 long dialogue examples with commentary, and dozens of additional lines that teach by example.
General social and communication guides
These books are centred around the idea of understanding social psychology and how to improve your general social ability irrespective of women and dating. Think of these as 'platonic seduction guides' more than anything else. Still massively useful, TRP isn't just about dating and relationships, it's an all encompassing guide on being a better modern man, and these books supplement and help you achieve that.
What every BODY is saying - Joe Navarro
What you say is often far less important than how you say it. One of the harbingers of success is understanding how nonverbal cues such as body language, dress, and demeanor affect how you are perceived and understood. In this book Navarro, one of the leaders in nonverbal behaviours, demonstrates how to modify your subconscious statements to your greatest advantage and also read what other people are 'saying' nonverbally. These skills will increase your ability to accurately assess moods, decode behaviors, anticipate problems, avoid hidden pitfalls, influence negotiations, and understand the secret motivations of those around you.

How to win friends and influence people - Dale Carnegie
One of the best-known motivational guides in history, Dale Carnegie's groundbreaking book has sold tens of millions of copies, been translated into almost every known language, and has helped countless people succeed. Originally published during the depths of the Great Depression--and equally valuable during booming economies or hard times--Carnegie's rock-solid, time-tested advice has carried countless people up the ladder of success in their professional and personal lives.
I think a lot of people would be mad if this wasn't on here. It's old, but gold. Do go into this one with a grain of salt though, if you applied this book in isolation you would be very likeable and agreeable, but not very dynamic or polarising, but it is massively useful for dealing with those people who you have to like and interact with in order to live your life. Think of your dickhead boss, annoying middle aged co-worker or the guy in your social club who you aren't into but need to be friendly with.
The Charisma Myth - Olivia Fox Cabane
The charisma myth is the idea that charisma is a fundamental, inborn quality--you either have it (Bill Clinton, Steve Jobs, Oprah) or you don't. But that's simply not true, as Olivia Fox Cabane reveals. Charismatic behaviors can be learned and perfected by anyone.
Drawing on techniques she originally developed for Harvard and MIT, Cabane breaks charisma down into its components. Becoming more charismatic doesn't mean transforming your fundamental personality. It's about adopting a series of specific practices that fit in with the personality you already have.
The Definitive Book of Body Language: The Hidden Meaning Behind People's Gestures and Expressions Allan & Barbara Pease
It is a scientific fact that people's gestures give away their true intentions. Yet most of us don't know how to read body language- and don't realize how our own physical movements speak to others. Now the world's foremost experts on the subject share their techniques for reading body language signals to achieve success in every area of life.
Drawing upon more than thirty years in the field, as well as cutting-edge research from evolutionary biology, psychology, and medical technologies that demonstrate what happens in the brain, the authors examine each component of body language and give you the basic vocabulary to read attitudes and emotions through behavior.
IRL Examples/Social Commentary
This section should really just be called the 'Neil Strauss' section, but this section contains books about PUA and dating culture from a explorative or humorous way. I actually quite like The Game, it's a terrible PUA book in comarison to actual PUA books, but as a comprehensive dive into the spectrum of PUA culture in the late naughties and early 2010s it's pretty enjoyable to read.
The game - Neil Strauss
Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever.
The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book about Relationships - Neil Strauss
Neil Strauss became famous to millions around the world as the author of The Game, a funny and slyly instructive account of how he transformed himself from a scrawny, insecure nerd into the ultra-confident, ultra-successful ‘pickup artist’ known as Style. The book jump-started the international ‘seduction community’, and made Strauss a household name—revered or notorious—among single men and women alike.
But the experience of writing The Game also transformed Strauss into a man who could have what every man wants: the ability to date or have casual sex with almost every woman he met. The results were heady, to be sure. But they also conditioned him to view the world as a kind of constant parade of women, sex and opportunity—with intimacy and long-term commitment taking a back seat. That is, until he met the woman who forced him to choose between herself and the parade.
Modern Romance - Aziz Ansari
A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from Aziz Ansari, the star of Master of None and one of this generation's sharpest comedic voices.
At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it's wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?
Dark Triad/Morally grey books (the juicy stuff)
These books (and I want more of them) touch on some of the darker, more corrupting concepts relating to social dynamics and power in life. If you wish to become better at manipulation, let the dark side of your psyche come out more and just generally be a better 'bad' person, these are your books.
48 Laws of Power - Robert Greene
In the book that People magazine proclaimed "beguiling" and "fascinating," Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum.
Some laws teach the need for prudence ("Law 1: Never Outshine the Master"), others teach the value of confidence ("Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness"), and many recommend absolute self-preservation ("Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally"). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.
The Way of Men - Jack Donovan
What is masculinity? Ask ten men and you'll get ten vague, conflicting answers. Unlike any book of its kind, The Way of Men offers a simple, straightforward answer-without getting bogged down in religion, morality, or politics. It's a guide for understanding who men have been and the challenges men face today. The Way of Men captures the silent, stifling rage of men everywhere who find themselves at odds with the over-regulated, over-civilized, politically correct modern world. If you've ever closed your eyes and wished for one day as a lion, this book is for you.
The Good Psychopath's Guide to Success - Andy McNab & Kevin Dutton
Professor Kevin Dutton has spent a lifetime studying psychopaths. He first met SAS hero Andy McNab during a research project. What he found surprised him. McNab is a diagnosed psychopath but he is a GOOD PSYCHOPATH. Unlike a BAD PSYCHOPATH, he is able to dial up or down qualities such as ruthlessness, fearlessness, conscience and empathy to get the very best out of himself – and others – in a wide range of situations.
The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success - Kevin Dutton
In this engrossing journey into the lives of psychopaths and their infamously crafty behaviors, the renowned psychologist Kevin Dutton reveals that there is a scale of “madness” along which we all sit. Incorporating the latest advances in brain scanning and neuroscience, Dutton demonstrates that the brilliant neurosurgeon who lacks empathy has more in common with a Ted Bundy who kills for pleasure than we may wish to admit, and that a mugger in a dimly lit parking lot may well, in fact, have the same nerveless poise as a titan of industry.
The Dictator's Handbook: Why Bad Behavior Is Almost Always Good Politics - Bruce Bueno de Mesquita & Alastair Smith
For eighteen years, Bruce Bueno de Mesquita and Alastair Smith have been part of a team revolutionizing the study of politics by turning conventional wisdom on its head. They start from a single assertion: Leaders do whatever keeps them in power. They don’t care about the “national interest”—or even their subjects—unless they have to. This clever and accessible book shows that the difference between tyrants and democrats is just a convenient fiction. Governments do not differ in kind but only in the number of essential supporters, or backs that need scratching. The size of this group determines almost everything about politics: what leaders can get away with, and the quality of life or misery under them. The picture the authors paint is not pretty. But it just may be the truth, which is a good starting point for anyone seeking to improve human governance.
