Something doesn't add up here...
I've known this since I was a teenager, and I've seen this play out so many times it's ridiculous, but most of the time when someone (man or woman) brags about a trait, they don't really have that trait. This is especially true when it's a trait of the "show, don't tell" variety, including (but definitely not limited to) smart, honest, loyal, independent, kind, etc. etc.
In this particular Carol's case, she claims "tough" and simultaneously "sweet and soft". I'd almost bet a day's wages that she's none of these things, but rather just a bitch with a bad attitude who thinks that's what being tough is. As for sweet, yeah, preciously few are any sweet women in these modren times.

This presents a dilemma for people like me. I'm not much to look at, but I have some unusual and highly useful attributes that aren't at all obvious. I can't tell people what they are because I'd come across as a douchebag... probably with a "Napoleon Complex" (I'm 5'7'), but if I don't tell people they'll just assume that I don't have any of those attributes and I'll be ignored at best, and actively excluded at worst.
Obviously people who know me well know what I bring to the table, but that takes a lot of time... far more time than it takes a woman to swipe left. That's not a problem for me personally because I'm happily married, but everything goes... so much faster... than it used to go. I'm glad I'm not in the market today: I (eventually) did pretty well with women back in the day, but I'd be screwed if my 20-year-old self had to navigate the mating market today.

I remember as a kid, all I truly wanted to get married, have kids, raise a family up as the head of the household. Nothing amazing. Just work hard and some woman would appreciate that. I learned as I got older that women didn’t want that.
Now, I’m middle aged (36). Now, suddenly, all of these women who didn’t have time in their life for a bore with a good job like me, suddenly want commitment. So, where were they 10-15 years ago? Too busy “having fun”? Meanwhile we didn’t get to “have fun”, we had work to do.

yup, but TBH, many of these women fully believe they were mistreated.
Example: Many take the strategy of hooking up with (hot) guys, guys above them, in the hopes that, it will stick. It doesn't, the guy won't commit to her and she feels (mistreated). She shouldn't, unless the guy outright lied, which vast majority of times its not true. They took a gamble and often these girls take a LOT of gambles like this. I read it on threads, many girls admit it that it's their strategy, hook up with a hot guy and hope it sticks.
Great way to get pumped n dumped.
Then, years later, they give up and change strategy to find (a nice guy).

I feel a slight joy as I look into my ex-wife's eyes when I'm picking up my son. She's so tired all the time. She didn't realize that her whole life was under the protection and provision of men (first her father, then me) and that all she had to do was appreciate and respect it.
Now she's working full time for scraps, only getting by because I'm timely with child support and cover child care.
And she hates it. She hates that I'm looking better (now that I'm not dealing with her, I'm in the gym more and eating how I want to eat), have dating options, and generally thriving without her.
I hope she enjoys being obese in her 40s.

I can't even count how many women I've seen break down in tears when they are honest about how much they hate being "strong and independent".
Every. Last. One.
They play tough, but they are only doing it because they don't have a choice - they can't manage the femininity or submission necessary to attract and keep a man willing and able to take those burdens off their shoulders.
Feminism has tricked them into thinking that independence from men is the pinnacle of happiness, not realizing that their independence from men has freed us from our responsibility to women.

Think about it. Before, you’d have to marry the woman before you’d get to sleep with her. And the price to sleep with her? Lifetime of provision. Not that this is inherently bad, just shows the kind of commitment a man would have to show.
Now, what commitment do we need? Like hey miss, you have a good job. You own a home. You can pay all of your own bills. Congrats. But if you think I’m going to commit to you for your rapidly aging body, you’re sadly mistaken. I don’t want a woman who is going to make me compete with her to “earn” her cooperation. I’ll go find one that is sweet and cooperative by nature. If she isn’t here, I’ll make a trip to Manila or Bangkok or something.
When the promotions and raises stop coming in hot and heavy, these women seem far less happy about their own life choices. Jordan Peterson once talked about how male and females on big law partner tracks tend to do similarly well, until around age 30. Then the women leave. Because their family is more important, or the stress of the job causes them to seek out lower paid but less stressful jobs. Guess what, ladies? That exit strategy doesn’t exist when you don’t have a man. Hope that career is worth it.

The price of sex used to be marriage.
That system was a pain in the fucking ass for men - we had to make something of ourselves, carve a stable life, pass vetting from relatives, and give up potential access to literally every other vagina on earth. Then you know what we got to do? Work every damn day in the hopes of consenting sex (and hope it's good) to provide for someone who didn't have to do anything in return except some light domestics that we could have afforded ourselves if we weren't supporting a wife.
Women benefited from the patriarchy and it's "oppressive" systems that kept the most attractive men locked to one woman, kept men on the factory floor and on the front lines, and created a system where women had a perpetual safety net.
I should thank feminists. As a tall, handsome, moderately wealthy, big-dicked jerk, I'd be in hell under the old system - only one woman? Thanks to feminism, I can have all the bad girls I want, and openly! There's no socal shaming whatsoever if I don't commit.
Women were the gatekeepers, and they abandoned that role for tingles. Fuck em, this is the future they wanted.

When my wife and I were engaged we discussed roles and responsibilities. We agreed that I'd make the money and that she would be responsible for the house. I told her that I didn't care how it got done - just that it got done. She could do it herself, or she could get a job and pay someone to do it for her out of whatever she earned. Not my problem either way... just don't make it my problem.
The dynamic has shifted over the years, and she ended up getting a master's degree (long-since paid for), and she works full-time. Her job is very stressful and she has some serious medical issues that are exacerbated by stress. The money she makes is nice and provides a great cushion and lots of peace-of-mind, but the fact remains that we don't need her paycheck to get by. A couple of months ago she broached the idea of quitting her job to concentrate on her health, and I obviously agreed. When she told her boss that she was planning to leave in 12 months they begged her to stay (she's the only person who knows how to do what she does, and she''s FAR better at it than the woman she replaced). In the end, everyone agreed that she would offload some of the routine stuff and do her "core" job with reduced hours. She makes less money now, but it's hardly enough to notice - much less worry about - and she has a lot more time to do food prep and exercise and go to her endless string of appointments with medical specialists.
If she hadn't secured marriage to a HVM when she was 20, her life would probably be very different and much harder. One of her sisters made that mistake and is now in her late 50s, twice-divorced, and living her life on "Nightmare" setting.
